Word-of-mouth promotion has always been my method to getting work but am I missing anything important by relying on word-of-mouth only? Should I be making postcards or go out promoting my design services, or online somewhere? Just curious what advice you might have, thanks.

If you're consistently getting enough work through word of mouth then I'd say you're not missing anything.
If you're not, then perhaps try getting in touch with local recruiters and agencies who may need freelance resource.
I don't think Krop caters much to freelancers or anyone who doesn't want to be a "rockstar" designer for facebook or something.

If you are getting work via word of mouth then most of you work is done.
In my experience, I used search all the boards to drum up work. Eventually instead of emailing I called directly and wound up getting 5 freelance gigs. I am still getting work via those gigs.
Having people say good things about you and referring you is one of those best things you can have in your arsenal.
