I used macs for years at home and through college n art college
then when i graduated the web design company I went to used PC's only (it was only the Project Managers that had macs).I definitely didnt struggle with the transition from Mac to PC as everything seemed to make a lot more sense and things were easier to do - also - being able to see file extensions etc - oo what a joy lol.
Ive been using PC for about 10 years now and I really hate going back to using a mac - even the new fangled ones.
Nothing seems to make sense, it seems you have to know all the "Apple Secrets" to be able to do things like Moth listed - these things are straight forward on a PC.It seems mad that the company which came up with the userinterface for the iPhone - which I absolutely love and sing the praises of - could create such an unintuitive operating system with such pants usability.

It's like being stuck in Disneyland using this.
Everything's fat and clunky.

Most of your rant is based on your os habits you would never have had you not been using Windows. That doesn't make them that much less valid though.
- Edge grabbing - part of my rant, but I don't miss it after all that time.
- Maximise/Minimise a window.
Just doesn't work the same way. There is a kind of "minimizing to dock", which is independent of "hiding" (⌘+h)
- Cut/Copy/Paste
Set up your function keys to work like they do in Windows:
Go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Modifier Keys...
- Sorting a folder by name doesn't group the folders/files.
Finder stinks in a few spots, they rewrote the whole thing for the new os edition due soon.
Long time Total Commander user, I use Forklift, it is brilliant and sorts out other gripes, including uninstalling software (that's right, OSX cannot properly uninstall software in 2009).
www.binarynights.com- I want a black desktop.
It's not for lazy ubuntians, it's for creative/multimedia types.
They roll their own gifs.
- Can't create a shortcut to a network drive - only something within it. Really useful.
Try dragging them from Finder's Devices list, rather than Shared list. It probably has to do with mounting point or something. Irritating indeed.
There are behaviours that annoyed the shit out of me at the beginning, but they turn out to be useful features.
Example: in Finder's "open/save file" dialog (when browsing for a file from an app) you cannot edit the files in the view. In Windows you can rename files/folders, drag them and whatnot, still browsing for your file (or a place to save one).
OSX behaviour is different but useful: you can drag files from anywhere onto the open/save view and the view path jumps to that file. This proved to be much more useful.
If I tried this in Windows, I would copy or move the file from its location to the view's.

Wouldnt sorting by 'kind' mean all your folders are in alphabetical and then all others are below in alphabetical order?
- no, there are file types starting with letters before and after Fraf
- Indeed.********

A big fucking warning for all Mac noobs:
Copying a folder onto a folder (with the same names) replaces all content, rather than merge with the new one (which it would in Windows).
You better learn this here than the hard way.
Again, Forklift gives you a warning dialog.

what a miserable and depressing person you are.

Thanks for the tips raf - gonna try some stuff.
But;
- I want a black desktop.

They roll their own gifs.------
Oh come on. Really. This is fucking primitive stuff here. Make a gif? Seriously? You think this is a feature? That's the kind of awful defense for shody workmanship I've come to expect from mac users.

- Cut/Copy/Paste - Pinky+Index was great on a PC. Now I need to use my third arm or something...."
Your thumb should be on the Cmd, Alt keys, not pinky (Using pinky on the Ctrl key is the workaround you have to use because Windows uses a modifier key waaay over on the left..)

I love Macs, but the lack of this kind of simple stuff bothers me a lot. Maybe it's because I used PCs for so long before the past few years, but some of the things on Windows seemed more logical to me. Of course, people who are hardcore Mac users may disagree, but it depends on a variety of factors, including which system you used first.
- Its totally what you are used to. The Mac way is better (mostly) :Pribit

You might find Default Folder useful too (for enhancing Save/Open dialogs, lets you click on any open finder window to select it in the dialog, stuff like that..)

This is a recent thread covering more or less the same material, some good links and advice there:

For multiple clipboards get iPaste
and get TextExpander (types stuff for you)

And if you want to mount SSH/SFTP servers in the Finder, MacFusion is good (GUI, menubar shortcuts)
