I mean the whole idea of nationalism wasn't necessarily only going on at the time in Germany. It was everywhere. The same way "free market capitalism" was the idea of the day the last decade, "nationalism" was the style (dare I say "zeitgeist"?) in the 1930's everywhere, especially as a response to the economic chaos of the Great Depression. It fit in well with the kneejerk reactions of protectionism policies. Exclude the other economically and find coherence domestically. Even in an ass backward country (and I say that with honestly super deep affection) like Brazil nationalism was the order of the day.
Germany just happened to have a cultural bias towards exceptionally efficient militarism, had the historical context (was once the Holy Roman Empire, so you had those motifs and concepts floating in the national mythology) and had the financial and psychological damage as losers in the Great War that provided enough friction for the Nazis to take the fucking concept over the top.
- I guess I got all wordy and didactic again, eh? I gotta stop...TheBlueOne
- true, some say if it had not happened in germany it would have in the US or UK "anyway".
NEWSFLASH - not true for the simple fact it did not happen in UK or US.********

These color images are a great and terrifyling stark reminder that it was really not so long ago at all. People you pass in the store or the street, admittly remarkable for their apparant age, were caught up in this, saw it's rise, heard of it on the radio, went to fight against it.. It seems like yesterday to them, and it still echos all around us today.. Being brought up with the historical, 2nd hand view of hitler as a total bastard, it's made clearer by seeing these pictures of 100,000 people that he was indeed ushered in with all the gusto and hope that Obama was, and all the country-wide positive feelings that he was going to make life better for the average german, entering a new age.. People in pre-war germany were exactly like people everywhere else, at any time - most people welcomed him, some were cynical. Both meaty and slimy shit-heads saw it as a great opportunity to practice unencumbered shit-headedness; think of your circle of friends, colleagues and acquaintances - how they would respond to the spread of nazism, some would be militantly against it - they would become vocal and disappear, or shut up. Most people would gradually go along with it, for real, or for appearances, some would excel and laud influence and authority over the rest of them with their new-found shit-head friends, and afterwards everyone would realise they could and should have realised what allowing shit-heads to gain this much power would do - wreck a nation, destroy half the world. Although a carbon-copy of nazism will never happen again, the apathy and passivity that allowed the shit-heads to get in charge is alive and well still.

"Only the mob and the elite can be attracted by the momentum of totalitarianism itself. The masses have to be won by propaganda."
- Hannah Arendt- How was she won over by the Nazi Heideiger who called his lover "my little wood nymph?********

- ..and she was young and stupid, wasn't she at the time?TheBlueOne
- I don't get it but it shows the strength of bonds despite knowledge. It must have twisted her.********

- Well, she did become anti-nazi you know...TheBlueOne

Great find! The scope and magnitude of what they did is incredible. The size of the rallies is amazing! They are very powerful images.
Thanks for sharing.

"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." -Hermann Goering
