The font that is usually the culprit is Helvetica (Neue, sometimes).

Thanks for all your help guys, sorted it, Luckily I didn't have to go down the drastic re-install option milky, as there is an option in Font Explorer called 'Clean System Fonts Cache' worked a treat!!
I use to use suitcase, but for some reason just started throwing my fonts into 'FontBook'. Font Explorer is a nice little application, kind of like iTunes for fonts, I will now be using this only!!!
Again thanks very much!!

I don't know anyone who uses fontbook. it sucks.
Looks like you messed up a system font there.
once you've sorted it with the suggestions above.make sure you get Linotype font explorer. It's free (or at least it was) and very good:

(1) insert OS X install disc 1
(2) once disk is mounted, scroll down and open the following
System => Installation => Packages(3) In this folder you will find a lot of useful things one of them is titled, "additionalfonts.pkg"
(4) double click on it and it should reset your fonts folder to it's default setting

I think Font Explorer can restore and fix the default system fonts. It's a good way to set the baseline for your system before adding your design fonts. Oh, and just say 'no' to Font Book.

It looks like you've dumped a system font perhaps?
Go into mail and preferences and fonts, see what font you're using to display and write messages. Find out what the default font is (remember it or write it down, just in case). Try changing this, see if it does any good. If not whatever font is listed (geneva or something similar) has either been dumped or become corrupt so replace it.

About a week ago I installed over 200 fonts into my Font book, which in turn kept crashing the application when I tried to open it, I also couldn't open illustrator without it crashing. I took the extreme action of binning all the fonts in my Font Book and started again, Now everything seems fine except for the formatting of my email messages, as this keeps happening when I receive an email (I've highlighted the weird spacing in cyan ...
Now I'm guessing I've thrown out an important font, but don't know how to sort it out, can anyone help? as it's driving me insane!!!
Thanks
