Glad to see this thread back again, and that you did what you really wanted to do. You're one lucky bastard to have everything work out so perfectly. Now get back to work!

***you guys should read the entire post***
I went on the trip over a year ago--best career move I could have made. Trip was a huge success, i'm still in close contact with the team members on that initial trip and they have been back to continue the project on 2 additional trips.
As for me, when I returned, I was broke and had a hard time freelancing/ finding real work. I made about $1,500 on a project and said "the hell with it"--so I paid what bills I had, bought a ticket to Vancouver left to find my best buddy who was up there in grad school. While I was up there I visited firms in-between sight seeing and sleeping in his RV. I met the lead guy at the interactive firm Burnkit. He sat down for a good hour and really pushed me to apply to internships/ entry level jobs at big boy agencies. So with that, I landed an internship at CP+B in Miami. I'm convinced the only reason my application stood out was my recent trip to Sudan at the time. My portfolio was pretty mediocre.
I got hired following my internship and have been fulltime at CP+B Boulder ever since. Learning a ton, and working hard! Now I just need to figure out how to get back to my brethren in Sudan. The country just officially voted to split--things could get crazy again.

*****UPDATE
i have my flight booked i leave may 12th, uganda, kenya, southern sudan, 3 months.
here is the best part:
i was planing on putting in a notice the monday after easter, two weeks notice, hopefully they wont cut me then, and i'll get paid through april, but it will be tricky leaving on good terms as i am quitting--i really need the references seeing how this is my 1st design gig out of school.
i have not told anyone in the company yet.
yesterday they make cuts, i am one of them, i get severence pay through the rest of april, they have no idea i was leaving, and they give me the cheer up kid pep talk and tell me how they think highly of me and i have a wonderful recommendation from all of them in the future.
if that is not divine, i don't know what is--to think i almost didn't accept the trip offer in order to "keep my job"
i'm so excited! i'll post the trip blog soon.
love you guys.

... or 'B'.
They're young... no worries - they must have money / funding / backing of some sort to even think of doing volunteer work for that period of time...
... plus that small piece of life experience will be great for conversation in an interview...
.. yep...
'B'.

leaving a good job in this environment would be tough.
but it seems like the stars aligned for you.
good luck on the return, as it doesn't look like its going to get better much sooner.
