Ive got the Ricoh GX100
great camera, you can manually change everything, plus its got a hotshoe for flashes etc, will take aftermarket lenses - not just the Ricoh ones. ive got a great wide angle Nikon for mines.
The lomo LC-A+ fisheye also fits it too.
AWESOME macro on it, can take a photo 1cm away from something. Not too sure if the GX200 is MUCH of an improvement for the money.
I spent ages looking at all the various similar priced cameras on the market but whittled it down to the Ricoh. The major thing was the size - i wanted a nice pocketable camera that wasnt stupidly fiddly.
My mum got my dad a 14mp (canon?) for xmas - was a new model with money off in the sale. Really neat lil camera - but bit too fiddly for my liking.
If you dont mind the size of the camera then obv taking the step up to a DSLR will always give you better resolution in pics.

Stewart ....
Look on flickr's camera finder then look up the GX100, you'll be able to pixelpeep peoples images theyve uploaded.

(note: dont use the above flashes on their own otherwise you'll fry your digital camera - you need to get a voltage stepdown adaptor - can get them from camera shops)

I've been debating about getting a Ricoh gx200. I just wish it has a bit better ISO performance and noise control. I hear the LX3 is pretty nice also.
I just feel that if I get a compact digital, i might not use my DSLR as much. I was also looking at the Leica Minilux compact film camera which could be pretty cool to have it around.

yeah haha, those pics dont show the camera at its most compact.the camera on its own is small, the lens retracts like most compacts and the GX100 wan fit into the smallest pockets.
being small but good was a major thing i was looking for so i could go out in summer with a camera in my pocket of light jacket and not have a massive bulge in there on days when i was just going out and not on a photgraphy mission.but on those days you are going out on a photography mission then thats when you take out lenses/flash etc to suit.
