At some point, probably 20/30 yrs from now, I'd like to go back and get my MFA so I can teach at the university level after having my fill of full-time design work.

Seems down here in Melbourne you do need the piece of paper to land a job at a decent firm. No paper necessary if you are willing to do hack jobs, and in all my freelancing I've never been asked about my qualifications.
Somehow without the qualifications I'm still in the game 13 years later. Maybe it's because I taught myself a little more about typography and grids than the people I have worked with.

finished high school and started working right away,
you only need a good portfolio and you need to know how to COMMUNICATE.sometimes when I see BFAs, PhDs and BBW and I kinda earn more than them, I smile with my usual cunty smile and look them down

I thought there was only 2 or 3 schools in the US that were accredited for a PHD in graphic design, at least this was 7-8 years ago when I was in college. I thought... I remember something in chicago being one of them
