i would NOT use ecstasy for anything constructive though (way too distracting), and i imagine opioids would also be futile as they'd just put you to sleep.
xanax could lend confidence to your design decisions

the trick with chemicals is to know their effects and use them as tools to enhance your normal performance or pleasure in a given situation.
if you need abstract thinking or are doing repetitive, boring tasks, smoke pot.
if you need to stay up all night to make a deadline, use amphetamines or coke.
if you have an enormous complex problem that requires clarity and creative visualization, use acid.
saying "drugs" as a whole is good or bad for a thing is silly.
also, i think learning how to handle your chemicals (i.e., not being distracted by your wife or cereal) will help quite a lot in using them effectively.
- hey i heard about this 12 step tutorial 4 your problem http://www.aa.org/applepirate

I could never work on an actual project and smoke herb, but if it's the week-end and I have some ideas I'd like to explore, then fuck ya, light it up.
Worst thing that can happen is I end up sexually mauling my wife, and passing out eating cereal.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I fucking loved saffron, and I mean full on obsessive, I saw her at t in the park one year and fucking almost fainted when she came on stage back in 1995 for fuck sake!!!!.
Honestly this has made me a sad man, a very dark day is upon us.

Drugs = I can see the bigger picture better (helps with AS3/C++/Processing/ObjC/PHP/JS/e... stuff).
Sober = I can do the detailed implementation.- +100000 if im doing layout and outline work for a AS3 project w33d$ are a must, if im trying to code the design must be soberapplepirate

I bet you could come up with some great ideas while taking a dump in a shower when you're high and trying to fall asleep.

pot makes you slow and generally drugs make you think a random idea is genius. when you've back to normal you realise it was just a shit idea.
i tried drawing on pills before, thought it was great, woke up the next day and the illustration with 'subtle shadows' was basically a grey page. just dont do it.

I find smoking joints helps me work later in the evening and not be so bothered about sitting in the same chair for the last 15 hours, which, lets face it is undoubtably unatural.
Sometimes the afrementioned smoke makes you less able to concentrate, but for the most part, it helps even the most banal problem seem interesting and helps me throw 100% of my effort into whatever I've got on at that time.
One interesting side effect of smoking (too much/all the time) is that if I stop smoking, for about 5 days afterwards my concentration is awful, often I dont have a few days to waste, so I go back to smoking. which (after a break) often sends the brain into overdrive.
- it turns you into a child! which is why we all smoke it and play skate 2 for 80 hours...ideaist

Yes but I can't do them at work. Hence the stuff I do at home is 10 times better!

No. When I smoke, if you put me in front of a computer screen I'd probably pass out watching episodes of Samurai Jack.

I need Demerol to deal with certain clients. Don't know if it makes me a better designer but it ups my survivability.

It's not about them making you a better designer, but they can put you in a better state of mind to get shit done, help let stress go and focus on goals, relax the mind when it's overly focused on a problem, a bit like ignoring something you can't remember so it can pop into your head an hour later.
