If you'd like an excellent book that also features Madagascar in at least one chapter, then I throroughly recommend Last Chance To See by Douglas Adams and Mark Cawardine / Carradine.

I'd say you are in dire need for some dostoevsky, I'd recommend the brother karamazov, if not that may be crime & punishment
just as dark (made some of my friends feel like shit, i enjoyed it very much)

I mostly read in Swedish and I guess that's not an option?
But one american book I thought this was really good is "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" by Dave Eggers.
Old book I guess...
Guess everybody has already read it though... Outside Sweden at least.
