That's generally for older vehicles and motorcycles, right? A punch of the gas to help align the gears when shifting.

And I mean, really, we just don't have enough idiots out on the road reducing the odds of getting from point A to point B in one piece. Every time I pull out of my driveway it seems young Vin Diesel is waiting to get behind me in his souped up Neon that Mom and Dad bought.

It has several purposes. Main one being to keep the revs up high out of a corner for a faster corner exit.
