I have sketch books but I am by no means an illustrator, If i really want to draw something i take a photo then trace it in illustrator.
would you guys show your sketch books anyways to potential employers?

sure. Mine is more random notes and scribbles than actual concept sketches though

Not me. I do, however, show clients roughs, which they have to pay for.
That being said, most of my illustrations start as sketches, which I scan, and import into Illustrator to get started.
- I fake roughs by putting FPO images into my concept then use the photocopy filter, set opacity to 10%-print out and sketch over********

a general rule of thumb is that other people don't tend to find them as interesting as you do

I use my sketchbook everyday to explore logo concepts and write notes about business ideas. Also to sketch out my perfect house, t-shirt ideas, handbag designs, furniture designs, etc. I think pencil and paper keep my ideas fresh and makes me use a different part of my brain that I would if I were designing on a computer.

I would rather explain -- shortly -- about the process in my pitch, if it is relevant. Most often it isn't.
Sounds like you actually put extra work into making roughs. I wouldn't do that unless they pay me for it specifically (they don't).

my sketch book is my idea book for the most part but If im not applying for illustrator jobs, which i wont then i guess i wouldn't brin show it. Unless you want to see a "worm racing down the street with a guys head and a big foam number one finger"
So what would you make of these design jobs that want to see sketch books? do you think they are just looking for someone who can design and illustrate?
- bring or show it. i hate it that i dont type what my brain says********

"If i really want to draw something i take a photo then trace it in illustrator".
That's art. You leave me wondering what you would do with a pencil.

I wouldn't call it art.
- Wouldn't even call it an electronic drawing. The shadows are all wrong. Sorry.********
- Drawing is about observation, dude - not photography, software and renderings.********

Drawing is about facture, or the sensible portion of an idea that becomes a fact by use of pen or medium. You need to think about this to make an interesting drawing - so that the idea needs not words, but with the full power of visualisation. If the full idea and understanding underlying a drawing doesn't come automatically then the drawing has failed, because good drawings need not words to be understood.
