A child is most often defined as a young human being between birth and puberty; a boy or girl. The legal definition of "child" generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority. "Child" may also describe a relationship with a parent or authority figure, or signify group membership in a clan, tribe, or religion; or it can signify being strongly affected by a specific time, place, or circumstance, as in "a child of nature" or "a child of the Sixties."[1]
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child defines a child as "every human being below the age of 18 years unless under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier".[2].
Biologically, a child is anyone in the developmental stage of childhood, between infancy and adulthood.
Social attitudes toward children differ around the world, and these attitudes have changed over time. One study has found that children in the United States are coddled and overprotected.[3] A 1988 study on European attitudes toward the centrality of children found that Italy was more child-centric and Holland less child-centric, with other countries (Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, and West Germany) falling in between.[4]
The age at which children are considered responsible for their own actions has also changed over time, and this is reflected in the way they are treated in courts of law. In Roman times, children were regarded as not culpable for crimes, a position later adopted by the Church. In the nineteenth century, children younger than seven years old were believed incapable of crime. Children from the age of seven were considered responsible for their actions. Hence, they could face criminal charges, be sent to adult prisons, and be punished like adults by whipping, branding or hanging.
- Yes, I know what the term "child" constitutes but thank you for that copy/paste.hedge

An Adult
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adu…The term adult has three distinct meanings:
Grown man or woman; mature person.
Plant or animal that has reached full growth.
One who is legally of age. Opposed to minor.
Adulthood can be defined in terms of biology, psychological adult development, law, personal character, or social status. These different aspects of adulthood are often inconsistent and contradictory. A person may be biologically an adult, and have adult behavioral characteristics but still be treated as a child if they are under the legal age of majority. Conversely one may legally be an adult but possess none of the maturity and responsibility that define adult character.
Coming of age is the event; passing a series of tests to demonstrate the child is prepared for adulthood; or reaching a specified age, sometimes in conjunction with demonstrating preparation. Most modern societies determine legal adulthood based on reaching a legally-specified age without requiring a demonstration of physical maturity or preparation for adulthood.
Although adult education simply means education for adults, not particularly sex education, "adult" also means "not considered suitable for children," in particular as a euphemism for being related to sexual behaviour.
Some propose that moving into adulthood involves an emotional structuring of denial. This process becomes necessary to cope with one's own behaviour, especially in uncomfortable situations, and also the behaviour of others.A professional
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro…A professional can be either a person in a profession (certain types of skilled work requiring formal training/education) or in sports (a sportsman/sportwoman doing sports) for payment.[1][2] Sometimes it is also used to indicate a special level of quality of goods or tools, sometimes also called "commercial grade".[3]
A professional is a worker required to possess a large body of knowledge derived from extensive academic study (usually tertiary), with the training almost always formalized. Professionals are at least to a degree self-regulating, in that they control the training and evaluation processes that admit new persons to the field, and in judging whether the work done by their members is up to standard. This differs from other kinds of work where regulation (if considered necessary) is imposed by the state, or where official quality standards are often lacking. Professions have some historical links to guilds in these regards.
Professionals usually have autonomy in the workplace—they are expected to utilize their independent judgement and professional ethics in carrying out their responsibilities.[4] This holds true even if they are employees instead of working on their own. Typically a professional provides a service (in exchange for payment or salary), in accordance with established protocols for licensing, ethics, procedures, standards of service and training / certification.
The above definitions were echoed by economist and sociologist Max Weber, who noted that professions are defined by the power to exclude and control admission to the profession, as well as by the development of a particular vocabulary specific to the occupation, and at least somewhat incomprehensible to outsiders.[citation needed]
Therefore it would be appropriate to state that a 'true' professional must be proficient in all criteria for the field of work they are practising professionally in. Criteria include following:
The highest academic qualifications - i.e., university college/institute
Expert and specialised knowledge in field which one is practising professionally
Excellent manual/practical & literary skills in relation to profession
High quality work in (examples): creations, products, services, presentations, consultancy, primary/other research, administrative, marketing or other work endeavours
A high standard of professional ethics, behaviour and work activities while carrying out one's profession (as an employee, self-employed person, career, enterprise, business, company, or partnership/associate/colleague, etc.)
Also taking into consideration natural & harnessed talents integrated & used with qualifications & when doing work in professional capacity. These talents~skills are just as important in any forms of work be it paid, unpaid, volunteer, domestic jobs or any other work.In narrow usage, not all expertise is considered a profession. Although sometimes referred to as professions, such occupations as skilled construction work are more generally thought of as trades or crafts. The completion of an apprenticeship is generally associated with skilled labor or trades such as carpenter, electrician, plumber, bricklayer and other similar occupations. A related (though not always valid) distinction would be that a professional does mainly mental or administrative work, as opposed to engaging in physical work. Many companies include the word professional in their company name to signify the quality of their workmanship or service (e.g., Professional Plastics, Inc. "The Plastics Professionals").
In sports, a professional is someone who participates for money. The opposite is amateur, meaning a person that does not play for money, but in an academic (e.g. college football) or other private setting. The term "professional" is commonly used incorrectly, as the distinction simply refers to how the athlete is funded, and not necessarily to what competitions he engages in or what results he achieves.
Sometimes the professional status of an activity is controversial, for example there is debate as to whether or not professionals should be allowed to compete in the Olympic Games. The motivation for money (either in rewards, salaries or advertising revenue) is sometimes seen as a corrupting influence, tainting a sport.
It has been suggested that the crude, all or nothing categories, of professional or amateur should be reconsidered. A historical shift is occurring with the rise of Pro-Ams, a new category of people that are pursuing amateur activities to professional standards."Professional-grade" equipment is built to higher standards than "consumer grade" equipment. Copyright laws that require copy protection in consumer equipment sometimes contain exemptions for professional grade audio (audio tape, CD) and video (VHS, DVD players) equipment (see Digital Millennium Copyright Act). This equipment is usually more expensive and sometimes unavailable to the general public. The term may however also be used as a simple marketing ploy, as it is normally not protected or legally defined.

Well, you've certainly convinced me. Wow, what an eye-opener.

Jeez can you guys grow up just a little? I'm a conservative, but not a Bush or Fox News sort of conservative. With that said, do you guys really need to be so childish when someone has a differing view on politics? How's about a little tolerance. I know you won't, but if some of you took a step down from your ivory towers of fervent liberal idealism I think you'd see that many of you hold some pretty scary beliefs as well; you're just in the majority here so pack mentality tells you that you're righteous. At least that's what I see whenever I stumble into a political thread, which isn't very often, so please forgive my wide ranging stereotyping.
For the record I don't condone what this cunt said on Fox News, it makes my skin crawl to be honest with you. But ffs relax with the name calling. Let's all just realize that this country is full of different points of view - and this site is by nature a microcosm of that fact. Or just carry on...I really don't care.

hedge/Llyod/qruise,
are you having fun?

Since there's so much copy/pasting going on here, allow me:
hedge: I see. So kids like the ones from the Columbine or Virginia Tech shootings publicly threatening to kill someone are just fine. But if it's someone on a news programming making an offhand comment/joke about it, then we have a problem?
dskz: Neither is fine, dumbass.
hedge: But obviously you're saying one is much, much more severe and deserving of severe punishment. According to the comments in this thread.
dskz: {no response}

we hold people in the media/ on the news to a higher standard obviously. scour You Tube and you will find footage of people snorting milk out of their nose and girls shaking their ass in front of the camera for ten minutes. it's really not that hard to understand.

A journalist makes a self admitted joke about assassinating a presidential candidate; How is this a liberal vs conservative issue?

You know the comical part to all this? I really hate Fox News, among other reasons, for their ability to drown out all opinions that don't fit their agenda. The whole 'either you're with us or against us.' The way Bill O'Reily belittles the people who don't agree with him, trying to make them feel inadequate, un-intelligent and less than capable of having the right to form an opinion of their own. This is their modus operandi, and I can't stand it.
Kind of seems familiar doesn't it? This sort of attitude, seems oddly familiar... But hey don't go changin' because of my point of view. People who don't agree with you should definitely be beaten into submission (or at the very least, silence), that's the way Fox does it...so it must be the mature way to handle these sorts of things. What's the symbol we made up for sarcasm? It escapes me at the moment but that symbol should definitely be sprinkled all over this last paragraph.
- mrdobolina0
how is this a liberal/conservative argument?
- tommyo0
It's actually a 'how to handle yourself when someone doesn't agree with you' argument. Has nothing to do with political affiliation.
- hedge0
The fact is Fox News is no more or less biased than other popular news outlets. If you think it is, that's because you're either a democrat, delusional or, more likely, both.
- And that makes it okay? Seriously, entertainment news needs to stop.tommyo
