I think he is a great director, but people worship him like he was the best thing to ever happen to cinema.
Plus elitist-wannabees like to name-drop him to seem like they know about cinema... which makes me uncomfortable to even bring his work up sometimes.
What's your opinion on Michel Gondry?

he was probably one of the first directors i knew by name. his videos are classics i knew since i was like 14 so i tend to ignore it.

He's a talented guy. Shows a different approach and style to sometimes boring medium. I think that's cool.

His music videos are great but his films seem a little slow at times. They give the impression that they're just a platform to do clever little things with materials. Generally i quite like his work though.

I think he has made some amazingly brilliant things that I frikking love and wished I'd have thought of, however I now feel his stylings and whacky approach to things has become tiresome simply because he has done so much work, take amazing painters for example they are recognised for the art movement they created or some seminal piece of work, gondry was this and now for me because he has done so much and has been so prolific and popular his art has become less fantastical and more commonplace and easily accessable.

Well you're all talking about him, so there must be something to what he is doing, love it or hate it.
I don't think you can say there's really anyone else out there making things quite like he does. He really has a unique vision of the world around him.
I don't love everything I've seen from him but i love a lot of it, and i have an affection and admiration for his sensibility and craft.
I think the best thing I could say about Gondry is that he has bridged a certain post-modern gap, bringing the ordinary and low budget approach to realizing one's imagination back up to the same (or close to) level as digital effects.
The worst thing I could say is that he really needs to work with a good writer to be at his best.

I like his work. There's something about him that makes it seem as though he's just sinking his roots in.

some of his stuff is brilliantly inventive an skillfully realised (especially the simpler ideas); he's too overexposed these days, victim of his own success; he's made for the short form and needs reigned in on the exact right project to transfer it to the long form.

i had some vhs tapes i'd tape millions of videos on and i watched lucas with the lid off over and over, i didn't know anything about music or videos i just thought it was amazing. the wannabes just jumped on the wagon once they realized they were missing out and he had a feature.
