online portfolio is pretty imported to have. don't have to be flash. basic works fine.

It would help a lot if we could see your work. If your excuse is because you do not have an online portfolio. That is a lame excuse.
You could simply do a nice header on white back ground, then list all your work out in a long scrolling page.Minimum a day to prep and build using the basic of the basic html.

Do you have any interactive experience? Many agencies want to see ideas as an AD of course, but having interactive experience is a big plus. Not have an online portfolio really sticks you out like a sore thumb.
