That's quite a shame, absolute waste of time and effort. They are trying very hard to modernise Cardiff with some great architecture, to see work like this bolted on is shocking, who's behind it?

I think what happens in these situations (and I have some experience here) is that when, as max prophet says, a committee is ultimately responsible for passing a brand, agencies become inclined to ploddingly intellectualise the process of design in more demographic, marketing-esque ways, to tick boxes which people with little sense of the aesthetic can use to justify the spend in cod scientific terms; "this brand covers x y and z, so therefore achieves a b and c outcomes". This kind of thinking strips the aesthetic consideration from solutions and leaves mechanical and safe results. Its unfortunate from one perspective but understandable from another (your clients, generally). This is where branding consultants have jumped in, in one sense into a hole necessary to fill and in another to exploit an unnecessary fear in the minds of the middle management who are likely to be steering these projects on behalf of the local authorities.
Don;t know if that made sense, couldn't be arsed to proof it. my tuppence worth.

ID's are tough, and most clients try to shoe horn in as many different criteria into it as possible. Tis difficult to try and communicate one core brand value or message.

I bet their brief had the usual catch-all phrases. Approachable, Friendly, Professional, Vibrant, Modern.

Anyone can come up with a load of bollocks to justify just about any logo. It doesn't make it any better.

I'm impressed they wanted to get away from the stereotypical daffodils and dragons and instead with the stereotypical multi-coloured dots to represent the "multi cultural" nature of Wales.
I think the Welsh dragon is quite a striking "brand" and they really should have stuck with that. Perhaps a web 2.0 style dragon reflection or something .....

I too believe there's nothing to be ashamed of in using the dragon to represent Wales. It offers an infinite array of possibilities in terms of interpretation and style and it fucking says WALES like no bunch of coloured circles will ever do.
Lets have a dirty protest.

It looks awful too corporate...
I agree jamble, the company I'm working at have been asked to look at the identity of a certain Welsh university, and I have started looking at redrawing the Dragon currently used, simplifying it to a basic shape, it is a very strong graphic, and shouldn't have been overlooked!

It's not helped by the fact that seemingly every company / brand who want to show they're culturally inclusive simply opt for the coloured balls approach.
I guess at least now we know green and blue people are as welcome in Wales as red people though!
