It's remarkably easy to read little junk article's like this and say 'easy money' or 'what a load of bollocks' or 'how fucking much could have done it meself for a tenner', and sadly these comments often come from people who apparently work within the same industry, though one has to ask at what level considering their level or articulation.
Don't get me wrong I don't think it's a particularly interesting logo but then I haven't seen any of it's implementation or anything else of the new brand, but you should be aware that working for clients in the public sector is an extremely difficult and political task, where many different people must be pleased, have their say and feel their input has been considered. Inevitably this design by committee often leads to diluted concepts that are led by over-politicisation. Probably best placed to blame the commisioning parties rather than the creative agency.
It looks like your typical public sector design-by-checkbox type solution really, bland and inoffensive - meeting lots of concerns about 'portraying diversity' and the like.
- It's a shame that these type of clients pull too many strings in these situationscreative-

max_prophet, I half empathise with your point, but a lot of really great design can come out of that sector under those very circumstances you describe if the people responsible for creating effective branding have the strength to push for a great result. Its not good enough to lower the standards to meet the limitations of commitee thinking or to do a less than great job becuase of political difficulties. Also, these are not problems unique to public sector work, this kind of thing is what we all have to do battle against, on all jobs, in all sectors, and we all have strive to do the best we can and have to accept defeat along the way.
This is not a junk article, its drawing attention to a very poor, generic, homogenised, bland brand logo device that will now be plastered, at great expense to taxpayers, all over Cardiff making it look bland and generic and immediately in need of a modernising rebrand.
I think you need to be here in the UK to appreciate just how many cities, towns, organisations, regional authorities, local councils, village organisations and public services etc all sport this kind of meaningless say-nothing emblem.
"Welcome to Cardiff"

"The colours of the logo, the city's first, are meant to represent the colours of the city, including the waterfront and parks.
But some readers of the BBC News website have likened it to a "spilled bag of tiddlywinks"..."

Plus there's that big typo under the word "Cardiff". Looks like someone let their kitten loose on the keyboard.

This was my point really. Don't get me wrong, I think this logo on it's own says nothing at all, its totally unemotive. I just don't like this trend of kneejerk reaction where everyone jumps up with "waste of money blehhh"
Sorry I just don't really find myself interested in getting angry and worked up about these little things, I'll leave that to the Daily Mail readership.
- But your's was a knee-jerk reaction, against our professional response to the logo...?Spookytim

And if you live in the UK you know that £45,000 is the entire GDP of Cardiff.

It's not knee jerk - it's rubbish! And it's not the first time either. Every c**t will think he can be a designer now.
