i went through a phase of terrible insomnia in 2001. absolutely the worst six months of my life to date. i hate the way that words jump about on the page and you can't focus on anything. argh.

are you spending a lot of time in the room you usually sleep in? maybe working on stuff? I had brutal indsomnia for about 2 years, seldom slept more than 3 nights a week if that and could find nothing which helped till I read articles on how your brain trains you to recognise spaces for specific functions. You should only sleep in your bedroom (or whatever, you know) cos your brain will find it hard to switch off if you use the room for other things.
I moved my computer to another room, I stopped sitting in my room watching tele etc and, coupled with breathing exercises and things I got over it.
I was phoning the samaritans and stuff at that time it was basically killing me. Good luck.

in addition to that; I had not had a bad bout in years till I came home from BCN and had to move temporarily into a one room flat. My bed more or less became my sofa and as I was winding my neck in a bit I was spending a fair bit of time in homebody mode. After a month or two I had the worse insomnia I had had in about 7 years for this reason.
Moved out. Got to sleep easy again.

I had insomnia for a couple of years
Then a baby came along and changed that overnight
Been having no problems sleeping since, the old he gets the earlier I have to go to bed...

maybe you need a big poo?.... go to the toilet and have a try, but becareful you might slump over after you have dropped your toilet cake and that my friend would be terrible.
I remember once I got all pissed up at a friends house by accident and I went to the bog when everyone was asleep and ended up being sick in the toilet and passing out on the floor completely naked, my pals girlfriend put me back to bed apparently, this was the first time I had met her :/ and she is japanese and speaks terrible English needless to say she was impressed and disgusted at the same time :'(back to you skt, tidy your room if it is messy and simplify things as well your life and your work write a list of things that need to be done and try to do something which involves physical exertion to change your brains about a bit this works for me everytime matey :)

not had it for years, used to get it really bad in uni, and i think that might have been to do with working in my room until all hours.
don't work in my room anymore and it is tidy... not sure what has triggered it. i'm full of the cold, but that should be making me drowsier not more awake.
might be time to start swimming again.
anyway, cheers for the help guys.

I've suffered insomnia on and off for years. I've not been too bad in the recent past but when I was a bit younger I was terrible with it. During the mid nineties I saw an awful lot of the various Olympics (both summer and winter) but the sports they show in the middle of the night are the real dull ones. I'll answer an questions on Curling or long distance swimming.
As for shaking it off, I can't really help you I'm afraid. I've never really taken pills for it and I would just generally go like you are doing then every now an then I'd lose a weekend to sleep.

maybe cut down on the roids

14 Healthy Insomnia Cures
1. DRINK A CUP OF CHAMOMILE TEA, unless you have an allergy to plants in the ragwort family.
2. TAKE THE DIETARY SUPPLEMENT MELATONIN. In the UK Melatonin is a prescription drug; in America it is available at wholefood stores and pharmacies. It is widely considered an effective and safe sleep aid.
3. TAKE THE AMINO ACID GABA. This safe sleep aid can cause some people to itch the way the B-vitamin Niacin does. Most people, however, find Gaba very soothing.
4. A MUG OF HOT MILK WITH HONEY AND/OR A FEW DROPS OF BRANDY. Though health experts argue, this is a time-honoured remedy which may be effective because it is so comforting.
5. TO NAP OR NOT TO NAP? In certain countries, like Mexico and Italy, napping is a part of life, and seems to be healthy. In America, napping is often regarded as weak or lazy. Naps are usually recommended to be not over two hours maximum, and if you do nap, the important thing is that it be regular.
6. DOZE, REST AND MEDITATE. If you can't fall asleep, these practices are highly restorative for our brains and bodies.
7. MORNING AND EVENING RITUALS. Do you like to read when you wake up, or before bed? Sew buttons? Play solitaire? Whatever you do, have it be regular.
8. TAKE CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM AND POTASSIUM. These sleep aids, found at pharmacies and wholefood stores, are both soothing and can stop `restless leg syndrome', which keeps millions of people awake. You can also rub organic balms into your legs.
9. AVOID STIMULANTS SUCH AS TEA AND COFFEE IN THE EVENING - unless: you're used to an after-dinner coffee and it doesn't bother you. Never disrupt a schedule that works.
10. FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE SLEEP APNOEA. Overweight people, or those with sinus problems, may have `sleep apnoea', a term describing cessation of breath during the night, usually accompanied by heavy snoring. Consult your health practitioner, because there are cures and sleep apnoea prevents you from getting the levels of REM sleep we all need to function healthily.
11. EAT POTATOES, WARM OR ROOM TEMPERATURE, BEFORE BED. Many studies show this to be a wonderful insomnia cure, as are a single candy or pasta. Other studies argue that one should not eat anything three hours before sleep.
12. USE WHITE NOISE. Boxes are available that produce what is called `White Noise', said to be highly effective for some. Alternatively, tapes of tides or soft sounds of nature can send you to sleep.
13. AVOID ANY STRENUOUS EXERCISE THREE HOURS BEFORE BED. Studies have shown that this is the wrong time for aerobic exercise, and will keep you awake.
14. DON'T GO TO SLEEP WITH AN ARGUMENT UNSETTLED. American comedienne Phyllis Diller is often credited with this bit of wisdom, but in truth it is as old as the hills. Do all you can to make up your fight before sleeping, or at least one of you is likely to have insomnia or even nightmares.

kelpies suggestions are better than designererrors for getting over your insomnia.
if you are working in the same room you sleep then you are fect. put comp in another room. that way your body knows the difference between work-room and bed-room
i used to get insomnia quite bad but when i stopped having T/coffee at nights it sorted me out a good bit.

My girl has trouble sleeping quite often and I can't fathom it... 2 spliffs, a bottle of wine and I'm good to go.. Of course I also have fantastic personal mental control and can shut pretty much anything off whenever I want...
Ignorance is blissful...

in college i used to use a few drops of Bioforce Valerian-Hops. It worked for me although it can make you a little drowsy in the morning and I have been told that it is dodgy if you are on any other medication/anti-depressants etc.
- i gave him some of those, too. belts and braces!paraselene
