What's the best way to make this work, cross-browser? I've been looking over different solutions but not being too Javascript-oriented it's hard to tell what the best option would be.

as far as i know its still js oriented.

Yeah - I figured as much. Just wondering if some people on here who are better at JS than me could offer some advice on the most elegant option out there.

flash cookies could work. Check out Blitz agency blog. I thought they found a good solution for it a while ago. labs.blitzagency.com
