If you always have the full name in plain text below, I don't think you need to make the SS more legible...

Well, if I was to put it on cards, website etc.. it would.. but i might use just the mark small, on work without the text.
But people not getting it isn't so important then.
Anyway, i've decided I hat that last version so it's not an option whatever I do.

Question:
Why do people save and present logos as gifs?
No big deal, just always surprises me.

Cheers Snuggles...
www.socket-studios.co.... [gif]
Less difficult for the people to miss the two S's... and less like a swastika...

(Sep 20 07, 08:29)No. Go back to what it was. I like it without the grey bgrd. You have the name below so what does it matter if it doesn't immediately look like SS. I think the lower left grey panel looks like it is about 'socket' into the space anyway.
Do another 20 or so designs to be safe though.

Oh, I like it btw.
And I don't get any nazi connotations from it.

Fuck me, it's straight to the printers then if it passes the v6 test!!
Actually, I'll sit on it for a week and see what I think about it then.
I'll probably hate it.
Cheers for the feedback though folks.

mg33, given that logos are generally comprised of only a few colours anyway, gifs offer a good balance of file size compression and image quality maintenance, sans artefacts.
They're like a lo-fi bmp, which would be the purest deliverer of on-screen graphics, if kb weren't an issue.
It's a bit less necessary these days with png's lossless flavour, but as they say - 'if it ain't broke..'

Also, i'm messing with ideas in photoshop at this stage and it's far easier just to save for web and spit a gif out.
Once I get to the printing stage, then it becomes an eps.
Not before.
I'm a web designer by the way. Illustrator does my tits in.
- mg330
cool Nairn, that's what I was thinking.
- version30
and to clarify, i like the first one you presented, but of course i would.,.. the pixeltwins logo...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jgu…(and is is just me or are your s's not squares, i assumed they should be imo)

Nah, 5x4.
Should I be seeing a P in there somewhere v6?
- ********0
4x5 even.
- version30
nope, no p
just a pixel and a 2i began to figure as much on the 5x4, i do really like it, looks like it would make a nice houndstooth type pattern as well if you were to keep stepping and repeating the pattern out

I'm torn on this one, skt - it's an interesting exercise, and if I think about from the Socket perspective, I almost quite like it - or at least, I like where you could take it.
However, I find it hard to force myself to not perceive it as a GCSE art exercise in toying with letter forms and space - and at its simplest, too, with austere blocks on a simple grid.
imvho, if you could emphasise the socket'n'plug aspect (how the negative fits into the positive), you'd be on to a winner - as it is, I kind of agree with the pre-millennial doodling sentiment.
// Maybe if you had some electricity arcing between the two forms - or flames, or a pussy cat with lasers coming out it's eyes..
(or maybe just curve-out the right-end half of the second S, to make it plug like,.. but that's treading on tat territory)

Your spot on about it being an "exercise in toying with letter forms and space" about half an hours worth to be honest. And socket has fuck all to do with it really.
Socket comes from the 13mm socket top i used to use in my bucket kit. If people want to read male female connections, electricity sockets etc into it then fine. But its their own idea.
I just liked the hidden S using the negative space. With most people simple seeing an abstract shape to start with.
I'm torn too though, i've had a few talented people tell me they really like it, and about the same tell me otherwise.
Baahh, might just pick a nice slab serif and print socket studios on my cards and be done with it.

i'm with d-e on this one. i think it's good.
