If you are doing your backups the right way, drive failure shouldn't be considered a problem (i.e. to be really safe, you should assume that any given hard drive will fail today with complete data loss, and plan your backup strategy from there...) I'd recommend drives over DVD's but then I'm backing up 100s of GB of content...
You definitely want to use backup software (like Retrospect), so that it does incremental backups of just the changed files, daily, without you havin g to do anything. The nice thing is you can also jump back to any earlier saved version of every file, so its like a versioning system too...

not what you wanted to hear but i backup to DVDs.. works well with my file management system; with every 4gbs of work I create, I burn off a DVD (2007-DVD001, 002...) and a duplicate copy which goes to a safe offsite location in case of fire.
i know the surface on a DVD is prone to eventual corrosion, but really... all storage solutions will inevitably fail over time.

That super duper app looks good. can anyone recommend something similar for winXP?
also joyride, if you can provide the links to the online backup services your buddy uses that would be awesome. might turn out to be worth it.
thanks for all the help everyone.

yeah, I'm paranoid about data loss too.
My buddy is getting his business and infrastructure set up now, all online backups. I've got the software running now. Super simple, runs at night, encrypted, all the normal stuff.
Prices are not too bad, when you know that something like 70-80% of business' fail that experience data loss... and it's a biz expense. So you may want to look into it

I back up all of my work to 100's of zip disks and put them in a locker at the greyhound station.

readyNAS 1TB RAID 5 (which i REALLY reccommend, it's awesome)
and Ultrium 2 400gb tape drive for removeable offsite

I back up my Mac to a Western Digital external HD. I've heard of people getting pretty hardcore and storing their external HD in a safe deposit box between backups (in case of house fire, burglary, etc)

back-up to external at home
bring external to off site computer (work, friends, moms) and copy down there - ofcourse this means using up someones elses HD space
don't worry about being paranoind. shit does happen.

As for backing stuff up, I guess most of you guys just rip everything to an external HD??
I'm thinking maybe I'll get a couple of them and store 1 at work and 1 at home or something.
Is there any PC software you use to make the process go more quickly?

Thanks for the concern Meeklo.
The property manager who signed for my laptop and then lost it due to his own fucking negligence is refusing to accept blame.
I explained everything to my dad who is an attorney an he sent out a nasty letter yesterday saying we'll bring him to court if he or the property management company does not pay up.
Hopefully that will generate a quick response, but I get the feeling this douchbag is just waiting for things to blow over so I think it might actually go to court.
Haven't ordered a new one yet, but I think I'm going to soon regardless of the outcome because I need it for work.

Just got a Western Digital 1 TB NAS box that runs RAID 1.

not to hijack your thread, but what happened w your laptop?

External, portable HD, and maybe one larger system as well to back things up to.
Online backup is slow in my opinion as well, but there could be a solution to that somewhere...

How do you guys back up your work? I'm not very good about it, but want to get better.
I copy all my files (~250GB) onto an external drive once every month or so. Important stuff I save on a flash drive in between major backups.
This works for now, but I want more protection and a better piece of mind. What if there's a fire? What if my house is robbed? I'm one of those crazy what-if people!
I would like do use some kind of online back-up system in addition to what I'm doing, but from my experience so far its painfully slow.
Burning DVDs is a pain in the ass so I'd like to avoid it.
What type of system works for you?
