Can't show I don't think, due to contract, but we do them all the time. Try to make as much of the content vector as possible. Limit big bitmap files.

I know what you mean, but they need to show actors faces...and cleanly.

Most of the banners you see out there are under 30k. Use fireworks for compressing the images, especially png 8.

30k is plenty. try doing them at 12k.

12k? Shite.
I have no problem hitting that limit, but not with these photos.
They are like network television posters that need to be made into internet banners.

make it 5px tall by 5px wide ;)

Is Fireworks better than Adobes Save for Web?

Play around with the image settings in Flash as well. Right click on the image assets in the libray and go to the properties. You can really skinny up the individual compression even more. I have a lot of image heavy banners that I was able to sqeak under 30k that way. Naturally you lose some quality, but it is what it is.

Typically that limit of 30k is just for initial load. Use AS to load in external content into a shell .swf that is below 30k and the world is your oyster.

I've noticed that Fireworks is a lot better in optimizing when compared to Photoshop or Imageready.
Right now I have this file and when I save for web as a png 24 file, it's 26.57k. I open it in fireworks and compress it even more as a png 8, and it's only 4.82k.
Also, when I optimized to a certain file size using both imageready and fireworks, i've noticed the image quality was a lot better in fireworks.

PS I'm speaking in terms of rich media banners which most larger portals sites accept these days.

Yes the external load is something I am looking into currently.
And Im going to switch to fireworks.
You guys are great. Thanks again.

I made a pure actionscript portfolio at 12k. I did my new one for 90k - but that was a biiig chunk of code.
The more stuff you perform purely in actionscript, the lower your file size.
Goto levitated.net or bit101 and steal their ideas.

I usually bring the images in full quality and right click on the items in library to set the JPG quality.

(Apr 13 07, 11:01)I'm gonna have to look into creating these "polite" banner as as well as I might start adding video into my banners. I'm looking at my specs here, and it states that I can load up to 1mb.

(Apr 13 07, 11:02)Can't you save png-8 out of photoshop? kind of comparing apples to oranges when you've got a 24bit image vs. a palletized 8-bit.
that's like Tiff, vs. Gif
