on the PC it is all about DVD decryptor kinda hard to find, but it is an awesome little app.

dvd decryptor is good. accept they are no longer updating its decryption technology and it hasn't been updated in years.
dvd shrink is ok, but if you don't mind loss of quality just to put a dvd on a 4.8gb size disc.
slysolft's anydvd really does the trick. combine it with imaging software like alcohol 120 and you really have something.
as for os x, i also have heard GREAT things about handbrake.
good luck.

i used to use dvd shrink combined with dvd decryptor to burn dvds i got off netflix...
i then realized the time trying to rip dvds/strip the bullshit/burn them to dvd again is def. not worth the time. too many fucking tracks with thethethethethe info skipskipskipskipping and shit. seriously, save yourself the time (which is much more precious than $10 spent on a dvd) and just go out and buy a used copy of the dvd!
now, if you were specifically trying to only rip dvds for other reasons...well then...i got nothin! nothin i say!

Thanks for all the tips guys. Actually I'm ripping a 30 DVD lecture set for my wife's medical board..they're not copy protected (they're already dupes) and quality isn't that big of an issue in this case..but I got thirty of them..and I need it quick...
I'll check out the DVD shirnk
