""YouTube is a significant, for-profit organization that has built a lucrative business out of exploiting the devotion of fans to others' creative works in order to enrich itself and its corporate parent Google," Viacom said in a release.
"Their business model, which is based on building traffic and selling advertising off of unlicensed content, is clearly illegal and is in obvious conflict with copyright laws," the New York-based company said"
aaaaaaaaaw fuck off, that's what i say.

"In a post-modern use of content, there will always questions of authorship and ownership"

Mark Cuban saw this coming a mile away and months ago. haha.
He's a smart fellow.

That's some pretty strong language on Viacom's part. They expect a hefty settlment probably.

If YouTube goes, they'll be others.

Piracy laws have really put an end to internet copying and digital file transfer.

Google has more than enough money and resources to make this a very difficult fight for Viacom. It will be a long battle if neither side settles out right.
That said, I am so sick of the 'old' media companies not adapting and realizing the value of sites like YouTube.
YouTube got me watching SNL again (on actual TV), introduced me to The Colbert Report (which I now watch on normal TV) and keeps me up on South Park when I miss an episode so I don't lose interest. It hasn't removed me from my TV, in fact it may have increased my TV viewing.
Just like movie studios charging me $30 for a new DVD and trying so many new schemes to lock it down. People pirate becuase the movie is not worth $30. Charge me $10-12 for a new release disc I would buy a ton more given it'll cost me $5 anyway to rent/VOD view it.
Wake up 'old' media!

They are protecting their creative rights..the same laws that help protect designers and the copyright over their work.

(Mar 13 07, 08:02)No one disagrees, but start finding new ways to legally share their content is the big issue. These media corps see sagging TV ratings and blame sites like YouTube rather than their weak products and archaic distribution method (i.e. Cable).

I stand corrected, I assumed that someone saying:
"fuck viacom. no seriously fuck viacom. do they really need more money?"
Was perhaps someone not understanding the full depth of argument.

As if a shitty compressed thumbnail video is gonna kill the HDTV DVD market. Once again, big business spitting on free publicity for obscure work.

Alot of stuff on youtube wouldn't be shown on regular tv. It would be pointless since it's not mass market. File sharing serves a purpose.

They're suing for £517m - Google will probably find that down the back of the sofa.

Viacom is just pissed about the deals they are making with other media giants.

Viacom needs to chill out and watch an episode of Joy of Painting with Bob Ross on YouTube.

GooTube is going to have to figure out a way for content creators to make money. Not just create spam airwaves.
