so in like 6 months, adobe is realeasing photoshop (basically photoshop elements) as a free online version - the software is online and you edit the photos in the browser...as we see with google calendar / google spreadsheets, it's all going this way, and with apollo the integration into more powerful desktop apps that are connected in a much bigger way with the www is going to make for some BITCHIN stuff - live photoshop tennis on the same document, community murals, browsing brush tips/filters/presets not from a list in your program menu but from a huge community of designers/developers....the potential for senior developers being able to work offsite and modify/fix/co-author code simultaneously on the same document.
This is totally going to affect our industry by the end of '07 and into 2008. you heard it here first!

I don't think the online thing will affect our industry too much. Photoshop elements didn't affect our industry and putting a version of it online won't affect it any more. We might find some use in collaborative tools like you said but the processor intensive work that is done by the full version of photoshop, illustrator, and bridge won't be replaced by a distributed version any time soon. I guess I'm just skeptical about this kind of stuff. It will make a splash in the consumer market, maybe even the prosumer market, but probably not the professional market.
My take.

i don't mean 'affect' like change the software that we use, i mean it the sense that those examples i gave are all totally different than the way we work now...

i think that all software is heading towards this online-only direction, but i don't think that it will really be changing the way we work for at least 5+ years. very interesting topic though.

Not all of us on this board are designers.

I too am skeptical of this online app revolution. From interface/usability standpoint web apps are awful.
Now with something like Apollo taking data from the web into a web app is very cool.
A good example of this is the success of iTunes Music Store. Bringing that information from the web into an application creates a much better user experience than say a web-based music store.

(Mar 1 07, 12:05)Hahaha, I get the majority of my pay from the programming aspect, however, the majority of my satisfaction from the design aspect of my job(s).

also here is a hint to some of the comments made earlier in this thread...
apps that are on your desktop are going to be integrated by alot of developers into the online world.
and things on the interwebs such as RIA's and other sites, are going to be made to be more integrated with your desktop...
really awesome stuff in this, whoever thought of the flashplayer from the very start must be well hung ;)
