I want to treat myself to a wide 20" or 22" Dell.
My graphics card is maxed out at 1280 x 1024 though.. and I don't know much about graphics cards. I don't do gaming or 3D, but video is a must.
What do I need? I've got an IBM tower - and don't want to spend a fortune.

you don't need anything new,
your new screen will probably come with a cd containing drivers that will update your native resolution, but if you have the money, get a new video card, you will get better colors

I'd love to be able to advise, as I once thought I had a mo'fo of a gpu, but have recently come to accept that my 3 yr old radeon 9800 with 256mb of ram won't even support the shitty new version of fucking Second Life (research).
it does support 2 large monitors and can still handle contemporary games (if not at top spec) and is probaly now valued at around £50 one of the
From what I know (v. little!) ati often are marketed towards towards video and 2d workers, nvidia towards 3d and gamers, but really - they're much of a muchness.

er..

but as an owner of a shitty card, really shouldn't"

all depends on how old the card you have in the machine is. For nVidia cards, anything 6 series and above will go widescreen. You can get a decent card for less then $100. Look for features, such as dual dvi if you want the ability to have 2 monitors. But make sure the monitors are dvi capable too. Some cards have 1 dvi, 1 analog. dvi will give you a better look

*slaps moth for abortion of a graphics card

ANYTHING is better than that.
You could walk into Maplins, make incendiary racist remarks - ask an assistant for their recommendation and still walk out with a card better than that bloody Intel thing.

for serious moth, your nerd card is now revoked!

I've been having a whole slew of problems with the Dell 2007wfp.
I didn't install the drivers properly (didn't uninstall the old ones) and my computer would freeze.
I uninstalled everything yesterday, and reinstalled. I think there's some sort of perfect sequence to installing them. I have the Dell driver installed too, I think, unless it uninstalled everything related to the monitor/video card.
And, my card sucks. It's a Connect3D Radeon 7000, 64 MB of Ram, AGP 4X.
When I get the money I'm building a new computer altogether.

mg you need to uninstall all video drivers, then run a driver cleaner. Reboot, then install the new driver. I've got driver cleaner pro, but I don't know where I got it. Check the torrent sites if you need. But that should help

monitors have drivers?
sorry to hear about your Dell problems, mg33 - i initially had a couple of issues with mine, but Dell operate a generous returns policy, when hassled.
the reports i've read indicate your model to be superior to mine, so you really shouldn't have to put up with a bad one.
have you tried it from someone else's machine (a laptop maybe) to check and ensure it's not your gpu?
- joyride0
yeah, good point nairn. While monitors do have drivers, reinstalling the graphic cards drivers should detect what the monitor is make the adjustments.
- mg330
Thanks guys, I need to do that.
Maybe you've seen my complaints about the monitor - certain colors have a very crystalline look to them, dark color and photos are awesome, but large solid areas of lighter colors look very grainy.

joyride2:
After driver cleaner, which driver do I install:
Original drivers and software for my graphics card?
Dell monitor driver?
New drivers for my graphics card? (I did this yesterday, and there was no ATI program added to the Advanced monitor settings.
- joyride0
download the latest driver for your graphics card from their site. and you should only have to install that.
After that it sounds like you need to recalibrate your monitor. At least with my dell, i turned the brightness way down. Most of them are cranked up really high by default.

Cool - I should be able to install the Catalyst Control Center for the ATI card. I did not have .net installed but I do now. It requires that.
Wish me luck, see you in a few!
- mg330
thanks a million.
driver cleaner worked, I was able to get Catalyst installed.
Not sure how this is going to affect the monitor itself, but hopefully it clears up the driver issues.
