Well, i don't think you can blame the media as much as you should blame the "few". The media is only a channel through which the message is transmitted.
Even though i would even go as far as to not blame "the few" as, for as far as i know, that few seems to use extensive research methods and are wary of cultural tendencies and global moods etc.
It's not just simply picking a color you like and say, this is going to be the trend for 2000-umpty..

i could see this: the materials and fabrics available then are able to be done in so many ways that it limits their designs. and this limited scope is what designers must work with as it is the current trend. sorry, ill today.
that is if i follow what I think is being said here.
hopefully the trendz in a years time will be starying from maximalism.

fashion trend reports are available via subscriptions and they cost mega mega bucks.
i get one emailed to me occasionally from a client. the content is not all that remarkable to be honest.. nothing i can't already figure out for myself by keeping an ear to the ground and reading streetwear blogs etc.

instead of pants hanging low, i see them being hiked up high held up by suspenders.
maybe the pants rolled up at the bottom. white sock no matter the shoe color and large glasses.

i got an invitation to visit a conference for trends 2008/2009 by some guru who travels the world all the time blahblahblah and it costs megabucks just to attend it alone.. meh..

yeah, i had some trial subscription in the earliest days of WGSN, it has grown to be pretty big now i heard.
must be expensive now...

My friend chris is the graphics/print/clothing guy at WGSN in london. He just goes on vacations spying things to push for the next 2 years
