i have a question for a friend of mine. he's a video producer and feels underpaid.
for this "top gear'esque" website, if i may put it this way, he makes videos of tests with erxpensive but mostly fast cars.
the good thing is he gets to drive and experience all these cars, but the issue is the website owner doesn't get the revenues for the website running, while they have a good amount of visitors since they released it.
the filming of the cars usually takes 6 hours per new video and about the same for editing.
what would you charge?

here are his videos

ofcourse it is not topgear quality but i think it's all pretty well done for a small venture like this.
any thoughts pls?

I've been editing for about 8 years with some shooting in between. I would say $1000 for shooting $500-$800 for the talent and then another $500 to edit so somewhere around $2200. Just as a starting point. Hard to say without seeing their process though.

Another way I do it is to say $1000 per completed minute so that would be about $5000 or so for minutes in the case or the video on the website

mog is pretty right on, but I would double it right off the bat. These companies have money, so charge em. Ferrari, the magazine, and those guys can afford it.

his shooting is pretty good, not great but good enough. his sound work is done well. maybe an average video guy starts at around 600-800 USD per day - if he's getting constant work that would be a pretty good rate. once he starts shooting tighter (no dirt on camera, blow outs etc, he could charge start charging more) that's just IMO. maybe that helps

cheers, mog.
well, his shooting is getting better. he originally studied journalism and then some tv/camera study.
in the early days it was so-so but today i saw a videoclip he just shot and it was already a big leap forward.
the info is appreciated!
cheers!

btw weather was shit and he works without assistants, hence the dirt on the camera. anyway, still no good but can be taken into account next time.
i am no video expert, waht do you mean with blowout?

Blowout is when a picture (or video) has way too much light for the camera to handle and the image turns white.
I would say your friend probably needs to charge enough to produce a professional product- I've done video and it's almost impossible to get a great product when you're working alone. It's simply too many disciplines in which to be an expert. Sound, lighting, directing, etc.
He should get a crew of about 2 or 3, and charge enough to pay them and himself. He'd probably do well to charge a flat rate per day of shooting. It's hard to tell someone exactly what to charge, because he might be covering equipment rentals, traveling, etc. Just charge enough to pay all that plus his crew plus himself.
Once you get the product better- you can charge a lot more.

£2000 per video not a penny less. The videos are fine for the internets tell me are they broadcast? on telly? if so you would need to budget for around £5000 per video.
