Every designer (at least those with an experimental vein) owe him a bug UP for Raygun mag work.

i agree kodap. i would have liked to have seen him change with the times though and produced something different again...

(I meant a BIG UP)..

I believe that since Carson there was a "designers republic"-type influence followed by a shift to a "bright/cutesy" influence that I think might have started in Japan....
and you cant forget the grafitti influence that is finally slowing down... which included the much seen "paint-drip"...
I hated these trends, but they were there very obviously.

His work really influenced me when I starting out as a designer and it has been very influential in guiding 'design' to where it is today.
hard to hate on someone because of stories. Primadonna behaviour is never accepted (love the Cato story, forcetwelve) but player-hating is just as bad.
I bet you in 5 years time his "Raygun" style will be back in fashion.

On DC and surfing:
I really like the covers he did for Surfer magazine. At the time it was a completely different way (much needed) of looking at surfing.
And he has been a massive part of Quiksilver having the best Corp ID and brand strategy of all the BIG surfwear companies.

I remember reading an article about how he got his start. One day he was doing desktop publishing in a program called Pagemaker, he didn't know the program very well and when he imported text into a text box all the text smashed together. Instead of fixing the type it he just left if jumbled together.
That's it.

In my juvenile delinquent days, if you 'dripped' whilst bombing or doing throw-ups, you were considered 'toy'...
Funny how times change.

i love his work but his website is like decoding morse code.

on a different note, I do respect his work. You can't deny his impact on graphic design.

I feel like I'm supposed to like it, but I cant get into to it.

i can't believe what i am reading! for any designer to say david carson is not "hot" is absolutely insane! he set the stage for people to look at typography as image. yes his methods cannot be applied everywhere but they were completely needed and necessary in graphic design history. thats fine if you don't personally connect to his i hate to say "style" but to flat out say you don't like what he has done is crazy.
if you are on of those people please feel free to donate your books to me. because i love him and he was one of the first to inspire me as a designer. flake or not.
and yea thats bullshit if he is an asshole in real life, but for a living graphic designer to become that famous i think anyone would let it go to their head a little. he probably ends up going surfing instead of going to lectures.

I'm looking at it.
the first book was better.

me and a buddy installed 2 way mirrors at his pad in Brentwood. He came to the door in a dress.

i actually think the second book was better, a cleaner act but still Carson.
