Sypathy for Mr. Vengeance. I've seen that. Great film. But it's not Japanese. At least I don't think it is. The director is Korean, and I believe the film is Korean.
He also did Oldboy.

Ack, I just wrote a response and lost it...
Anyway, Sympathy for Mr Vengance is Korean. the same director did Old Boy (which I consider his best), and Sympathy for Ms Vengance.
If you want weird Japanese cinema check out anything by Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi, Bird people in China, Gozu), Suicide club, or Battle Royal.
For a bit of a mixed bag, check out 3 extremes, which has 3 shorts from different asian directors (two of which are the guy who did Vengence and Miike).
Another good Korea horror movie I just got to see was R-Point, but not super weird, just scary.

Start with Old Boy, IMO much better than Mr Vengance.
Ms Vengance was also said to be good, but haven't seen it yet.
R-Point (horror)
Tale of two sisters (horror)
Conduct Zero (cheesy comedy)
My Sassy Gal (drama, comedy, romance - not sure of the real Korean name)
Joint Security Area (drama) - koreans love it, I thought it was ok.
3 extremes (horror shorts)If I think of any others I'll let you know.

many of these movies I am posting are extremely violent, janne.

Bullet in the head, quite possibly one of john woo's best hk films. quite disturbing, before woo sold his soul to hollywood.
Sorry if you were looking for strictly korean and japanese movies, but these are also excellent examples of asian films. I have seen a few great taiwanese films too, but names escape me.

kikujiro
takeshi kitano is mainly known for action flicks in japan, but this movie is a sweet, funny and sometimes sad story about a man bringing a little boy to find his mother.

I highly recommend this one.
almost all of these movies can be found on http://www.torrentspy.com

yeah, i am not much into violence. i have trouble looking at it. but that is a personal thing.
i should not judge a movie's merits based on this.
i may check these out, thx.
btw. i bought Wong Kar Wai's "in the mood for love" (2 disc edition with tons of extra's) a few days ago. Still need to see it. I am especially looking forward to see Doyle's camera work.

weird jap movie:
strange circus.
there's so many good films coming out from asia these days ( or is it just that hollywood sucks lately ).
i recommend : attack the gas station, my sassy girl, the eye, re-cycle ( latest pang brothers movie - amazing!! ).
if you use torrents u should check asiandvdclub.org, plenty of movies to get in there.
