A client would like approx a 300Mb (ridiculous file size i know) video file on their website. The file would be a 3D animation combined with video etc.
What would be the best way of doing this?

Find out what streaming server is supported by their hosting provider, and convert the video to that format.
If you rely on progressive downloads, you're going to have some very unhappy people (both viewers and whoever is paying the hosting bill).

Ya, that sounds reasonable. Certainly avoid AVI. That funk doesn't stream.

LOL @ 300mb stoopid client

yeah, its very frustrating. I have tried to explain that the file size is too big for web but the client insists that they must have this on their site....
it all equals BRAIN DAMAGE

Can you compress the files before it's uploaded?

how long does it go for? a 300mb movie file could always compress smaller?

exactly I have have a 400MB 2 min video uncompressed sitting on my desktop. that can defiantly be compressed down to 1mb easily.
Flash Video offers the most compatibility.
also if you hosting provider supports Coldfusion or PHP there are scripts available to stream FLV's without a streaming servers

Clients can be idiots. Tell them to post on youtube along with agency.com

300mb?! What they hell are they posting? A 15 min movie?
Stubborn ass clients, anything can be compressed.

I'd suggest the idea of mailing the CD instead. It would probably get there before the download.
