Any on NT? I'm crap at it myself, but I'm looking to buy a set as a wedding gift. Anyone know any shops in London that sell some nice ones? I dont want anything weird. Either wooden or stone, handmade, nice wood etc.

I do play, not too often unfortunately..
I got one of those as a gift, quite nice

i've been teaching my son, so i get to play pretty often these days.
with a chess set you can pretty much spend as much as you want. my set's a cheap glass set, but would eventually like to have an heirloom set.
something like:

I found that site whilst googleing it blaw.
They have just what I'm looking for - I just really want to see it and handle it before buying.

I like a game of chess mothman, but I obviously haven't got a clue about London.
If at any time you are taking on a drunk freind at chess and they are the first to play say this.'I see you have opened with caperfaile... a simple and fruitless gesture I will counter rather obviously with vanguards trio and later on you will see how in some very simple moves you will yeild your king to me'
makes them shit themselves every time.

don't get a glass set by the way they stink. The second picture blaw posted is lovely, or you could buy a turned set from some turkish place in London as these guys do it by using their feet to work the crude lathe they have and make wonderful peices, not the best obviously but the history of the set is a nice story.

no i dont want glass..

The only reason I know this is cause we have a wood lathe at home and the recent turners magazine had a groovy article about these people who do it all without electricity and etc.

moth have you got any goat rolls on the go I'm peckish :)
- blaw0
i agree with checking it out hands-on first. my mother recently purchased two sets as gifts and was disappointed in the actual size of the boards/pieces.
chossy, do you do much woodworking? i have an article by roy underhill on on how to make a treadle lathe. crazy stuff.

i played a guy at work in chess who thinks he is a lot smarter than everyone in the office
i had him working a pawn to the end of the board to get his queen back...which at a certain number of moves rendered his king completely defenceless and i took it
the look on the guys face was priceless .... he wouldn't accept the defeat though...he made up something about how one of us moved wrong ... cant remember exactly
when people in the office would ask who won, he would say....well it was sort of a draw because (someone) moved wrong at one point which fucked the game up

cool, v4. what did you grab?
i plan to make a chess table one day and will fit it with kickass pieces like those.

I play. as much as possible, but usually alone :)
In my experience, no one ever uses those fancy expensive sets. Usually because the figures have been turned into cats or medieval chickens or something unrecognizeable...
I think a simple wood set is the way to go. IMO.

(Jul 31 06, 00:53)That's exactly what I want to avoid.
As I said - nice wood, nicely done. Traditional cut though.

hmm... i love chess.. i was playing w/a personal ranking of about 2200... (if that means anything to any of you).... but after i left college and the 'education' bit about 4+ years ago... I stopped playing in a competitive commulitive forum (score that's averaged on games won/loss based on the ranking of who you play) about 3 years ago...
... i haven't move a piece on a board in about that time too and I miss it.... (I miss playing competitively in a group of 30+ folks... bouncing from table to table.. that was a rush... if you find 'chess' a rush... :) )....
... continue... :)

I play a bit, and I got my board from John Lewis. They have a nice selection there

moth, there's a games shop that sells all these hand made games and stuff in Greenwhich covered market.
Also there's an excellent games shop opposite the British Museum, just round the back by the side of that alley
