As long as they keep their journalistic integrity and pursuit of objectivity, yes. There's clearly honesty in that.

well the beeb is far from commercial here in the uk, which is why they got into so much bother about criticising the government about iraq, but taken from the point of view whether it is moral or not for them to advertise with such imagery and subject matter...
well it's what they do, news coverage which more and more also includes the "man on the streets" view on things so.
I did miss the sony ad thread, but I'd say if it were a sony ad I'd find it less appropriate, given their core business.

people that smoke herb are criminals too, following algo's logic..

that applies to 25mph and over.//
you know what I meant.
I would love to see that ad to be placed in LA or San Diego. They would need a bigger LCD for the criminal side.

"well the beeb is far from commercial here in the uk"
but are they as well in the US?
i don't believe that. i don't think the british taxpayer ok's news coverage for the US on their expenses.
BBC World uses advertising and is by those means engaging in commercial activity.

nope on the weed thing too. I have a perscription, just walk into the clinic and pick what I want. If I ddin't and got caught with weed , I would accept the fact that I broke the law and was involved in criminal activity.

Sure it's commerical Janne, but if one of the advertisers asked the BBC to alter their reporting for their own corporate interest, I trust they would drop them as sponsors. News agencies should always try to insulate themselves that way. Reputable ones do.

you're most probably right janne.
it is directly to do with their core business though and it is thought provoking. The kind of ad you'd stop and look at and think about and for all the right reasons too.

(Jul 6 06, 15:24)good response, Mimio. And that is how it should be.
but how much does the ad itself (apart from it's intentions -> commercial interests or not) differ from, say, the united colors of benetton campaign?
the ad itself, the message is jsut as right in your face and controversial as the others we've discussed today, or not?
or are we only obsessed by intentions (which is good for the most part btw) and ignoring the effect of the message itself??

a speeding ticket isn't a 'criminal offense', khilled... check your defintions of law in america. Yes... there are 'criminal levels' in traffic violations... but they're 'rare' and usually involve 20+ over the limit w/wreckless endangerment included...
now... as far as the billboard - it's a 'hot topic' and everyone is talking about it... AND... IT'S DEFINETLY SOMETHING THE BBC WILL TALK ABOUT... at least in their news 'section'...
... it's a 'real life' situation that people are going to talk about and discuss... it's 'news'... therefor I have no problem w/the billboard using a 'hot topic' to attract viewers - especially when they're (the bbc) actually going to 'discuss' the topic (news programming etc)...
... now... the PSP thing... absolutely different - the only thing tying the bbc board and the PSP board together... is that they are both 'designed' and used for 'advertising'.
the PSP is fucking around with a HOT WHITE CHICK... it's intriguing and spirited... IT'S NOT RACIST. Even the black fella in the board looks like he's 'intrigued'... which makes the Ad 'clever and sexy' to me...
... so get over your polictical 'correctness' - I see no problem in using 'the negative' side of a social topic in a bright and clever way... both Ads brought a smile to my face and a 'neat!' to my subconscience because they were both clever.

Can't tell from the picture as I have no idea of the situation of the board.

(Jul 6 06, 15:29)same here, ponyboy.
although i do admit there's a racial intention in the psp ad, although it is depicted very playful and stylish, which makes you think twice about the ad..

this offends me.....

i just walked by this ad!
i didn't respond to it at all, visually and emotionally.

i just think the vote thing is useless otherwise it's an excellent ad...i also think having half the ad pointing to the other half of the ad is also useless
i was in a gay bar last night beleive it or not (to see a straight band just so you know) and they had a car ad on three of the urinals, both of the ones on the left and right said "you know you want to look to your right/left" then the car commercial was in the middle..that is a good use of pointing to another part of the ad

good link, algo. definitly one to question, indeed...

if it was just some mexicans and the border patraol and "bbc, now in america" it would be perfect
- ********0
It's a fine ad. And very fitting that the comments on this one are sub-dued.
Very fitting, haha.
Now ... how would the reactions change if the ad was a picture of the same intersection as below it, and instead of mexicans they were black and the cops were white and border patrol was changed to NYPD.
You'd be up to 1,000 posts in no time.
