VW's fast campaign by CPB got them gold at Cannes.. and also been acredited for increasing sales
paradigm remains..
did the cheeky ads sell those are cars?
or
did the cars just sold them selves from product perspective.
would they have still sold the same amount if they just had plain communication creative methods? (say just a pic of the new car or commerical of a new car with no creative.. or is it that not showing any creative elements it self become a creative element?)

Good question.
Impossible to know.
But it was a good campaign that absolutely raised awareness and 'did the rounds'.

theres always an arguement between "cool shit" that raises the profile of a brand that in turn increases sales or the product is so good it just sells any way...
its in the eye/head of the consumer - what makes them tick.
take Apple, the Think Different campaign - made you think about the ethos "brand" behind the company. it appealed to "thinkers" people who were "different" appealed to dare i say older people - business managers thinking about their technology needs on a larger scale - whereas their packaging consists of super simple shots of their products , minimal type which appeals to a different demographic of a younger "coolness" type of person- the ipod generation - which is sexier? which is cooler? which sells more product????????
good creative will aways raise the profile - so in the "one step" advertising rule of getting a consumer closer to buying your product - raising awareness - i'd say it works and does sell more things than it would without it...
dang, hope all that made sense...

a good follow up question is: how would you feel about VW if you had never seen their advertising? most of us on here are in their target market I'd assume, and my sense for their brand has been shaped purely by advertising since that 'synchronized' ad like 5 years ago
I drive a honda, but VW was on my list when I was car hunting, and that was purely due to their ad efforts

is this some kind of regression experiment?

i personally like ads done by arnold before they lost vw to cp+b late last year.
cp+b is doing a lot of creative eye candy. but does that really ad any more value to the brand or it's just a shock value that wears off quickly?

(Jun 21 06, 05:00)thats the " next step " rule of advertising right there... you looked at VWs, but you bought a honda, why? it was cheaper, the dealer gave you a better deal, your mates had them, they were nice to drive??? you still looked at, and maybe even wanted a VW tho right? orwas it just the "cog" that get you all horny??
//
The history of thew VW adverts has been aroiund since the 50's the original "lemon" beetle ads...
different, irreverant, cute, cool - the VW brand, the " peoples car "
CP+B just following the mantra.
and it works...
:)
now, if VW made real:
again:
not this.
then we're tallking VeeDubs.

honda in north america, the ads are not a clever as in europe
rather it brews the culture for mod cars for lower end models where and higher end models are plainly targeted at the americana
personally, the ads for ipod was very well done, the dancing and ipod gets you moving, its not an asperational lifestyle effect (it seems to happen) but rather more along the line of what i really wanna do when you are listening music. now apple's computer commericals, thats another question (do i wanna be the fat geeky man or smart assed unshaven saggy jean boy, answer: neither)

the new apple ads are dumb. it's a blatent smear campaign
the ads shown to the public are all part of an ovverall approach be it viral or whatever, it just has to match itself
when print = web = radio you can do whatever you want
look at adult swims blackcards for a text driven ad system that goes from screen to print
in cali there were even huge billboards along the 10 that read "[adult" on one and "swim]"
i think this comp i did for them also helps illustrate my point

"[adult" on one and "swim]" on the other

right mr adveristing man

i don't understand how they can quantify this, as they did run the unpimp your auto campaign concurrent to the fast campaign.
i think the sales bump in the car can mainly be attributed to the gti's cultish followers snapping up the first model re-design in a while. i wouldn't be surprised if next year's sales fall off significantly without the early adopters.
ads do not sell anything, people do.

i think VW sells by it self, im sure advertising has helped a lot before, but right know theyre selling on their own.
they look good and they are good, i even want one.
but also im pretty sure that if they dont advertise their sells will drop.
so i think, advertising for them right know is just more precense in the market than anything else.
anyways, i want one till i see one i like better.
