watercolor set

so i bought a watecolor set from King's department store for $1... they didn't work very well.
does anyone have any suggestions for a decent set? Not too expensive, but good quality.

why not play safe? around $1 per colour:

you gotta pay a decent penny for the "artist quality" paints or they'll just fade away on you.
and to be honest you'll have a lot more fun with decent quality paints.. the pure pigments will flow nice and mix much cleaner.
Cotman or Winsor & Newton is what you want. i prefer tubes but if your just experimenting a tray might be easier.

I only work with Windsor & Newton or Grumbacher tubes. You'll pay more, but the quality shows in the final product. Unless you just don't know what you're doing.
Try Gouche, it's easier to work with. More control.
