your book should be taken more seriously. this shouldn't even be a question.
never upsize a jpg. its a jpg.
its like upsizing a model car to full size and expecting it to run. it may look good to the untrained eye, but anyone that looks close is going to comment on why its rasterizing. irregardless of any upsize fix. [invented for those that don't no better, likely on windows] i was once that guy.start over... and learn the lesson that you make files printable the first time. 300 dpi. 9x13. you can always size down for web or whatever. for printing, you have to originally set your shit up for where it could ever possibly end up. that or its gonna look, well... bad.
good luck.

as far as i know you cant do it in raster formats, but vector no problem. when u wanna make the raster larger, it will pixelate and you gonna lose a lot of quality because of that. so its better to export to 300 - 600 at first then resize to whatever you want

(Nov 28 05, 06:46)this is good in theory, however when designing for web, a lot of things need to be aligned to pixels and to get a true sense of how things will line up, look and structure, its really annoying to design in 300dpi and then downsize. Everything will have to be re-aligned.

the genuine fractals plug for photoshop is pretty good for interpolation.

there is a few tricks, but in general no™

oic thanks. the files i have are photoshop layouts and i did them at 72 dpi because they are strictly for the web, but now i need to print them and i've changed to 150 dpi, it's smaller but not sure if they will print nicer? i'm so tired, i think i need sleep.

genuine fractals is okay but not great.
If you want to keep pixel fonts and toolbars and stuff like that crisp, do this:
screenshot(or use original file), change to indexed colour in p'shop, change image size to 200% or 300%(can only be done in multiples like double or triple etc), then change back to rgb.
it might be a good idea if you have full colour images and photos, to enlarge them separately because they go crappy in indexed colour.

(Nov 28 05, 01:53)If you're doing that it's best to leave colour depth at whatever it is (assume 24bit) and change interpolation in the image size dialogue to nearest neighbour before resizing.
Or just change the print size in the image size dialogue but uncheck resample image - this changes the dpi without changing the pixel size of an image.

i use Extensis pxl Smart Scale v.1.2.1 and it's real good IMHO. better than GFPrintPro 4.1 (who have recently been bought out by onOne™)
they both do the trick pretty well. but yer never gonna be able to do what you want to do. you will have approximations, nothing more.

If the concepts were done in photoshop, just resize the psd to 300dpi, then print from photoshop.
the fonts will just scale. might need to re-import any photos though.

exactly, use the apps for the photos only, not the line art.

-import screenshot in flash
-trace bitmap (curve fit - pixels)
-export as ai, eps, swf
-import in illustrator and scale
-print it(should work)

(Nov 28 05, 01:48)I recommend Genuine Fractals too... provided you have a fast machine and dough to spare. It's a worthwhile investment esp. when you have clients who can't give you high res.

read this and you'll see that apps as Smartscale/Fractals are not giving a significant better result compared to changing only the dpi/size using Photoshop.
