I know 2 people with Acers that love them.
imo - there's not a whole lot of difference. I try to avoid Dell b/c their service is terrible, although one person commented that Acer's sucked too - so there ya go.
I only buy Vaio's, new in box, on ebay. Best cases, best displays imho, and you can get 'em reasonable. I got a 1700 machine for 1165 a couple months back. I like 'em.

ummm, this may be good or bad depending how you look at it, but Dell supplies Acer with pretty much everything. Acer just slaps there name on it and changes the casing a bit. There was a press release from Dell and Acer about it. Didn't believe until my CDW account manager showed me in order to save me money on the machines I was buying. So knock yourself out with whichever, you're not giving up quality in either case.

Think the Dell Inspiron 6000 was PC World's 'Best Buy'. I have only had Dell computers...they work great, look good, and small business support is amazing.
Acer is up there too. Don't think the casings are that well made tho.
I'm going to buy my sister a laptop for her graduation...will need to do the same thing too next month.

i had problems with the screen of my acer laptop.. I was overseas at the time and really needed to work. the customer service from acer straight up sucked. they couldnt tell me anything, no estimated fix time, nothing. they knew what was wrong but it took forever to fix it - it showed up with no notice and overall the communication between the repair dept. and the customer service phone center was nil.
frustrating as an independent..

I have an ACER and it's been awesome for over 1.5 years now. I know Dell is pretty cool too, but I've never had one.
