I bloody hate all that bubbley. glowing liquidy faux 3d textured fiddly flash pish - how tired does some teenagers idea of Kool have to get before it gets dropped. Pish.

agreed. Their work makes me wanna hurl. Its total overkill. It comes to a point where you need to sit back and take a look at what you are designing before adding more shiney buttons.

I love good flash, don't get me wrong, and they have some skill(z) for sure, but all these sites like theirs and 2A's where you have to wait a fortnight to watch 20 wee panels appear in super animated bouncy fashion is so pointless ans showy compared to, say, the Wonderbra site on here yesterday where the tech is used to enhance the experience rather than make something go ludicrously whizz bangin all over the place.

I think their ego(s) have just got the better of them. They obviously are doing OK from a business point of view...And their design is like Marmite – You either love it or hate it.

I think asking people to re-render the "house style" is more reprehensible than asking them to take a test. How lame.

I was asked to do design test for my current job and another for a high paying job that I interviewed for. I don't really agree with it but I have a hard time backing down from the challenge. Before I graduated another well known company asked me to redesign any web page as a test.

My current job wanted me to redesign a high level prototype screenshot that was in consideration for their site redesign. That seems shady when I think about it but I got the job so I guess it doesn't matter. They were more interested in the process used in designing it. I did it in XHTML/CSS and talking about the benefits of seperating content from presentation. The other one I had for an interview was to design a home page and content page from a powerpoint page schematic. That was a pain in the ass. They didn't keep the files though. They were on my server. It paid really well so I had to do it.

I still think it all comes down to your portfolio.
Doesn't it feel like a lazy move? Shouldn't they be scouting the landscape for the specific type of talent that they need?
I don't think their test is really going to show much, besides your ability to rehash old ideas. However, upon skimming through the above posts, I think that's the general idea.

Yeah I applied for that job too and got the test but it still sitting in my to do pile! Maybe this week I'll get to it. I got get some more plugins for photoshop though.

I'd say if it's your dream job do the test. If not don't bother.

you can tell by the work that they are workaholics and that's their life. If you see a test like that and even whinse for moment don't look at it as something that's just fun and you might do anyway cause your fucking dope, then you'd probably hate working there even if you did get the job.
