" and you have to accept it yourself, they are just, somewhat, ahead of us. designing and developing the sites of tomorrow...gets to remind me of KIOKEN "
2A.....is fighting for the future however all they created was really nice looking drop shadows......
FI..... has some pretty graphics that at times serve more aesthetically then functionally...... thats all..everything is a glossy thingamabob.....
josh...... has done amazing things since kioken and has stretched peoples imaginations..... and still is.... functional and progressive....
josh did a new google.....as a joke...... and it was better then anyone elses commissions to redesign google....

and then again......I respect their design..... as the fact is.....they are better than most.....
but the super hypedom gets tiresome.....

I don't get why people hate the test. No, I didn't get an interview, but I did it, no whining. Why? It was a cool opportunity, and let's face it... if you're opening a US office, you'd weed out as many people as possible too.
I look at it the same way as the agencies who make you freelance for 1-3 months prior to going full time, or those that withhold benefits for that long. A pain, but part of the game. Don't like it, don't apply for jobs.
It'd just be nice if I didn't get weeded :)
Also... the person who sent that email is a freakin' jerk. They asked to keep it confidential, that's the least you could do.

I agree 90%...
I saw my replacement at one job show a great book during their interview, but flop once they had to do real work on a deadline.
Of course, that's something I guess you notice during the interview, but if you have a few hundred resumes and sites to weed through...meh.

they're making cash doing one thing very well, so what? they aren't a bunch of mincing advertising fruits whining about design's problem solving. I like speak up, but I rarely read it because of metrosexual infestation. if you want something cool made, go to FI.
On another note, there's no way I would take a test like that. why would someone want to sit around all day and make stupid gel buttons that glow.
- jamble0
Can't say as I'd want to do the test at the moment but I guess in this day and age it's easier than ever to bullshit your way into a job.
I did a short test for my last job which looking at it was probably more to see about my ability to meet a deadline than what the actual work was and I think that's a lot of the problem in the industry with new graduates.
They are more competent than ever but still have little grasp of meeting tight or multiple deadlines.
I guess if the FI ad had been worded better nobody would really be complaining
- 37Signal has a good quote on this... "shipping is an important feature, your product should have it."zarkonite

i would not bother with that test unless i was really desparate.
anyway, maybe i'd choose to be a plumber instead.
it's more creative.

Can't believe they used the words 'swoosh' 4 times in one paragraph
- lvl600
they're already being wankers before u get the job , must be a great place to work
- clint0
"Can't believe they used the words 'swoosh' 4 times in one paragraph"
ha ha that's what i'm on about.
basically their brief means: "we are looking for a working mule person with a good eye that doesn't mind churning out countless macromedia/apple site hybrids and does not ask questions"
- jamble0
I'm suprised more that the "design brief interview" is before they've even bothered to do an initial paper sift on the applications and spoken to people.
I think it's ok to test people in this manner to establish their skills match their cv but to be honest unless I had a real hard on for working at FI (luckily I don't) then I would find it very difficult to motivate myself to go through all that just to be able to maybe speak to someone there.
I'd normally expect this sort of test to be requested once you've made it to at least a second stage of interviewing as a means to shorten a shortlist further.
swoooooosh.
- CFish0
WTF...They're asking you to design a 'swoosh' to extend their family of 'swooshes'. Will that make them complete? I can't beleive that is one of the 4 'tests'
- CFish0
I can hear the sound effects in that studio now...sitting at their machines making swooooosh sounds as they 'design'
- jamble0
do you think there are a lot of high fives after a good swooshing graphic is born?
- clint0
fi creative meeting:
"man, i think this new logo misses something, errr, what shall we do?"
"i know! let's put a swoosh in it!!"
ha ha, thank god i'm not there!
: )
- clint0
just had a look at their work.
some is quite good actually, ie:
http://www.fantasy-interactive.c…i think they've got some winning formula on at the moment, and they just need someone to fit exactly the bill, hence the test.
- geeque0
what's the big deal. if you want it you'll jump through hoops.
a pimp will always shag you before putting you on their books
