and the windows media worked fine

Sorry, I'm not trying to ruin your day, but if you're going to be a developer, you may want to check out some other browsers as well, and make sure that projects look good in any browser and on any platform, whether PC or Mac.

...and you did in the PBS, this section of the site is used normally to gain a response of some sort(or at least that is what I thought), and judging by the amount of comments on how cluttered, poor the site is (crit or no crit) then I think there are a few issues with the site you need to address (professionally speaking of course)

just know how to do it

i don't know why it shows up differently. But rather than say this and that, I thought I'd show you something is a bit off.

oh, and the NEWS section does appear in Firefox, but on the way bottom left of the screen... and ya have to scroll down, which seeing in IE, you are trying to stay away from...
also, with the up and down links, they do may the news column scroll, but just not where you want them.
i used layers a while back, but I gave up. they always looked so choice in IE but then with say, netscape 4.8 or so and up, they just looked like, well, you know,
