Flashback: Remember when you had to design sites for 640x480 resolution and how shitty everything looked on your tiny tube monitor?
God, in like 4-5 years, a lot has changed.

No.
But I know what you mean by 'a lot has changed'.

i do all my werk on a G3 ibook tangerine clamshell with max 160 megs ram and a max size of 3gig harddrive with only available 820megs of free space. my max screen size is 800x600 hence the size of my site.
but soon i will step up and spend the cash and get a new puter, also the internal battery is completely dead and it cantt re-charge so i am running off the wire, but the slightest touch and the puter shuts off! vvery retartedly difficult!
but all my werk there!
so instead of remember then , its really remember now!:)

I remember when all I could do was program a little man to walk across a stage, using forward slashes and asterisks in ZX81 Basic.
Now, I can make him wave in 3d, and illuminate his hand from behind using After Effects and its still crap :(.

even then i designed for 1680 x 1050.

(Aug 29 05, 10:58)Now they look just as shitty but in a higher resolution.

I don't remember 640x480. I started designing about 5 years ago, and I remember 800x600. That one was quite popular for a long time. It just changed drastically in the last two years or so. Right?

know what ya mean shellie..
a few days ago, i was actually looking for a file, and came across a few web concepts from 1999 i did for a company..
couldn't believe it was that small..
640 x 480 is crazy small..
but it sure taught you to use your space selectively and wisely..something some of you youngsters would do well to learn!

remember bandwidth limitations?
having to worry about a page being less than like 30kb

I still have my Learn HTML in 24 Hours book here, with my little notes in it. I have written "table border = 0 means that it doesn't get a border" in the tables section. And look at me now! I can create borderless tables without even looking in the book!!

supposedly 25% still use 800x600... that' significant.

(Aug 29 05, 11:08)Yeah true a lot of people were designing for 800x600 then. But a lot of big companies wouldnt accept it yet because there were so many people using 640x480, i had to comply. Many companies wont step it up until 3% or less of the users will be effected by upgrading.
If you dont care about usability, you can design for whatever resolution you like.

(Aug 29 05, 11:11)hell, i dont remember that. but i do remember having to optimize my navigations to be 90k or less. there are banners now with higher file size than that.

My parents still use 800x600. It's easier for older people to use. Not to mention, they want something they can see clearly.

I remember when people, myself included, made tons of money working for a firm that itself didn't make any money and all I did for them was basic HTML and Photoshop.
