For an external FW HD with about 100-200GB space. Which brand would be best/safest?
Fujitsu-Siemens
Hitachi
LaCie
PikaOne
Seagateor any other you would recommend EXCEPT the horribly unreliable MAXTOR?

i have a lacie 160gb, never had any problems since i bought it 1,5 years ago.

I got a LaCie, but only because it sounds a bit like lassie, to be honest I am disappointed with the titties, but it stores my files well enough so it's not all bad, ken?

i was also thinking of LaCie, it ain't the cheapest but i really need soemthing reliable.
although i do remember a whole wave of threads about a certain 200Gb LaCie that accidentally started to format itself, out of the blue? is this true, does it still happen or only with a certain OS?

come on folks.
i need to order one within an hour!

whichever one you decide on, get two of them and keep the second as a mirror. you'll think it's worth it if/when the HD dies. Believe me.

I have a 120 GB LaCie, and have been nothing but pleased with it. I DO remember that wave of threads discussing the unreliability of the LaCie externals (which had me worried at the time), but no troubles. I absolutely love mine!
hope it helps. :)

Lacie 120 Gb had for about two years not one single problem and I have done utterly shit loads of transferres and there is stuff on it form the day I bought it aswell and these files are fine.

Lacie and Seagate for me
I don't think the reliability is that big an issue, IF you do things properly and have redundancy. Always use a daily incremental backup software, always have your stuff on more than one disk. Assume any disk will die with total data loss TODAY. If it breaks, get a refund, get a new disk... no problem.
