The scratching noises are bad news. I would not power it up again if you're going to send it in for recovery as you're just doing more damage.

i guess that's when it happened. this is from the system log..

From the first link on google...the text is below my comments
At least the place he recommends doesnt charge if they dont find anything.... I went to http://www.totalrecall.com and it cost me 2200 for my pc...but thats becuase my drive literally fried....
Janne, why dont you think of sending it to an american company.....but cheaper...
------------------I would recommend Drivesavers (mentioned above) whom I am not affiliated with, or Tekserve (whom I work for).
At Tekserve you are looking around $1,000 (top of my head) if we recover data you need, no charge if we fail. Drivesavers is more expensive but they may be able to get it if we don't.

sorry to hear that janne...thats gotto suck...id take it to a place that recover data.

latest news:
UPS will come pick it up and bring it to the cheapest but still very reliable disc recovery lab for me this afternoon.
it is prolly only the "arm" that got stuck and that would be fairly easy to fix prolly costing me no more then 300-500 euro's!!
*fingers crossed

are mac hd's different from pc?
cosmo
(Jul 21 05, 14:53)NO, phisically are the same.

Hope for an unexpensive happy ending.
btw, leave maxtors on the shop shelf next time and buy an Hitachi (former IBM) or Western Digital HD.
I always had IBM, and are solid as rocks. One of the three i have sometimes makes some worryng noise, but is still working (3 years old, hevily used and thrown here and there).

this is a massive thread, so I've not read it, but I hope you get it all sorted Janne, that sucks badly :'(
- instantok0
hope all works out janne...once you get back up try out a more bulletproof solution: but 2 hds, one as a workspace and the other set up as an auto-backup...i would do it if i had the dollars

cheers!
yeah Maxtor sucks major balls.
that's what i have learned now. IBM is much much better indeed. (the original disk in my G4 is a IBM and still going strong).

that sucks.
more hd's can do the trick but hd's are magnetic and thus always vulnerable.
best way is to get an external firewire dvd burner, really fast one, and make backups once in a while. store the dvd's outside your house, like at your mom's or something. best way.

(Jul 22 05, 08:24)"i already do that. but it's been a while. thing is: everytime i backup it's like 10-15 dvd's!! nuts!
i'd love an external fw HD drive and then also backup on dvd's, but less frequently.
- anon0
you probably make an entire backup? why not use software specifically made for that, only burns the new and updated stuff. saves time. and discs.
or do just frequent backups for projects you work on.
i have an external fw hd, it's fine, but still it's magnetic so no guarantee you know.

dont let the mice get in to your computer

It's good to have two huge internal drives plus an external firewire of the same size so you have 2 sets of automated backups

100 fingers crossed for it works out
Janne, I talked to my buddy about it and he said you should get it checked at a lab, but never pay anything to the company (regardless of what they say) unless they can get any data off it.
Good luck buddy
