Be sure they are trustable.
I had some sleepless nights just thinking about all my data laying around in some strange office...

ok cheers, people.. i will try that..
altho i am a wee bit afraid i may only damage the disk more.. not sure if this is true or not though!!
were you able to recover 100% ??
i mean as soon as i get the disk to work i will back it up and prolly throw the disk in the bin afterwards...

good luck!

do you have another Mac available?
if so... connect your dead g4 to another mac with a firewire cable. reboot the dead mac while holding down the "T" key (i believe).
it'll boot the dead one as an external hard drive and you will be able to pull off all your work quickly.
then you can worry about how to fix the HD.

i got everything, DW and Norton couldn´t find shit but this did.. and it aint gonan hurt the drive.. a harddrive is made so the reading arm dont ruin the discs if they brake ... it an old myth from the 80's when they didn't know jack shit about drives

In Norway, where I live, there is only one company that can recover data from broken drives and they charge between 3000 and 4000 euro for the job. They charge 450 euro to check if there´s possible to recover anything. But they told my colleague that if the reader arm had fallen down on the disk, it would be all gone, so I would be most cautious if I was hearing scratchy-like noises.

sorry if this has already been said, but have you tried this?
1. Shut down and disconnect your firewire drive leaving nothing is connected to the firewire ports.
2. Restart, and use Disk Utility to repair permissions on your internal.
3. Shut down, and disconnect the AC power from the computer and your drive; also remove battery if portable.
4. Let computer sit unpowered and disconnected for15 minutes.
5. Reconnect AC power to only the computer and reinsert battery if portable.
6. Restart computer.
7. Verify that firewire ports are visible using System Profiler.
8. Reconnect your firewire drive, and refresh window in System Profiler to rescan the firewire bus, and confirm that drive is visible.
9. Repair disk and permissions on the firewire drive.
10. Try your external HD.

i head ascratching noise on my drive. I kept trying to boot it over and over again. little did i know the scratching noise was the arm scrappping the data off the drive. Brought it to data recovery, the listened to it boot and told me the data would be lost forver. becareful the amount of times you boot it
- toe_knee0
best of luck tho. i had another drive go potty and i got stuff back. just dont get mad at it and throw it :)

damn.. i hate it when i hear different opinions warning me for things.
so what is true here:
A) the arm cannot scratch the disk, so don't worry and try other software alternatives
B) be fucking careful and don't make it boot again, unplug RIGHT NOW!
i need to know!!!

btw: i'm home again.
designerror, are you there?
- ********0
yep

maybe ring a data recovery place. Theyd give you advice.
also, this may sound condicending, but search google for the symptoms. Lots of geeks out there that love to give good info.
but seriously, your data is on the disk, if the disk is scraping/scratching it cant be good for the disk
