not as silly as "its time to get a sense of pride back into our lives"
unless you were joking.....
it's a great thing for sport in the UK but its not therapy

have fun to whoever lives there. It's the biggest pain in the ass I have ever been through. Lived in Atlanta during the 96 games. What a clusterfuck, my advice is to get out of town.

Get a sense of pride as in - actually start believing that this country is a Great one and that we can acheive
Just cause you lot are a bunch of misfunctioning, pot-smoking, "anti-establishment", free loading picture drawing wankers doesn't mean that you should shit on the what this will mean, not only for London, but for the country, for our kids and for the future of sport
Stop looking for the bad in things and celebrate this
its ok, you're allowed - your peers wont point and laugh

beachboy, do you not have the tiniest of suspicions that it's just a load of empty symbolism that does not and, more importantly, should not be used to artificially jack up the economy, causing us all a lot of inconvenience in the interim?
- opiate0
hooooray, hoooooray twirl the flags. Damn , you guys a really grasping for something to celebrate over there aren't you.
- kelpie0
well Beach Boy, if it's anything like anything else that happens in London (the crazily expensive Wembley for instance) it sure as shit won't be a bonus for the rest of the country, certainly the one you refer to as "Great", but if they do this well, you'll be right - not a whole heap of faith in their ability to actually pull it off is what I'm getting through, still here's hoping :)

paraslene hit it right on the head.
opiate
(Jul 6 05, 06:23)she has a habit of doing that.

i've lived in an olympic city before, opiate, same as you. once you've seen all the realtime bullshit (which is actually worse ten years on than in the lead-up to the event itself), you come to realise that you and your municipal government have been played.

I'm not looking at it from that way though!
I grew up in a world of sport mixed wiht education i.e. father = teacher, mother = national schools athletics selector and seen a steady decline in both. this will bring a massive (unprecendented in 2 generations) boost to sport in schools which ultimately can only be a good thing
The arguments about economics can never really be lost or won as the repercussions start now, and will go on for a generation! Redeveloping the worst parts of London will only be good as well!
I admit a key factor is what they will do with the facilities and land after the games, but why be cyunical now - why not believe that this is a good thing
it just winds me up so much paraselene

i admire your optimism, beachboy. would be more than happy to mainline some of it myself.
