I'm not vegan but I've been wanting to try a Jackfruit BBQ sandwich for months if not years. I was a vegetarian for about 10 years in my 20's and would like to try and eat healthier again.
I actually like the Beyond and Impossible Burgers and thought and heard this jackfruit tasted just like shredded pork BBQ.

Bull Shit! It was the grossest thing I've ever tasted. Actually it wasn't so much the taste but the texture.
The texture was like like orange slices and mushrooms doused in BBQ sauce.

Sorry pigs. I gave it a try but I will be exclusively eating you for now on.

    • Yeah jackfruit is strictly a visual thing imo. Tastes nothing like it looksscarabin
    • As someone who became veg for more ecological reasons than moral ones, i definitely can attest that jackfruit (as good as it can be) is no match for pulled porkhardhat

How do you have a high fat vegan diet? I like lard. I feel far better eating lards and fats than sugars. Considering the other side but don’t see where the fats come from besides highly refined products and nuts.

I'm a bit dumb sometimes. Often.

I'm 'helping' a friend do some bits and pieces for a [insert type] cafe in East LDN - all very hip and of the moment.

They want some membership keyfob/ring type things doing, because reasons, and specified a 'natural' medium, so obviously i suggested leather, because it's durable, pocket and bottom-of-bag friendly and will take branding nicely.

I was met with a look of horrified disgust because, if you're paying attention to which thread I'm writing this in - she's very vegan. This is not the theme of the cafe, but it's another of its facets.

A shame. Leather would work great here. Oh well. haha

I'm hoping we're not more than a decade out from some kind of vat-grown 'dairy molecule' substitution.

Same too vats of complex meat and fat molecules, lipids, long-chain whatevers.

Maybe a decade atter that, artifical eggs.

Whoever cracks this biotech and enables ingredients that provide the umami taste and mouth-feel of meat fat/dairy/eggs will make bajillions.

I often cook essentially vegetarian food, but add in concentrated chicken stock just to give it some extra oomph. I'd quite happily replace that ooomph with something artificial.

    • if I was rich and, let's face it - a lot smarter and less prone to writing shit into the void on the internet - I'd spend my days trying to crack this.Nairn

8 months after my previous post on this highly important subject, Greggs have released a vegan version of their Steak Bake, which I tried on the way in to work today.

    It was terrible.

I mean, of course it was - the whole point of a steak bake is the meaty gravy (let's not go into the fat and gristle that's increased in percentage over the decades), so the dessicated onion taste that takes its place, swaddling the cloud of particulate SoyQuornWhatever is absolutely by no means in any way a stand-in for lumps of sinewy meat.
