customizing the templates to the current content is annoying as all hell.
plus, I have used them in a couple of projects that didnt have the money for original designs..... I ended up making about 2k anyway....
they don't go in my portfolio but they go on another site that I am making specifically for low end peeps.... those files btw in flash on templatemonster are not organized....not named......and they are absolutely horrible to customize... you need more then your usual web monkey for the flash....
and doing the psds is really annoying.....

Templates are for people who want to make their own company website to save cash. They get frustrated with the learning curve. They buy a template. They fuck it up. Everyone thinks they just ripped someone else off. They lose out. Designers prevail.

I've had clients asked me to match their site with their existing print marketing materials. What do you do then Template Boy?

TemplateMonster's problems:
They allow designs that have ripped other people's sites to be sold for wholesale with little regard to who got ripped.
Most of the time, you still need a web monkey to customize the flash. I have done quick cash projects doing this, because clients are clueless.
A big company would never use a template, and therefore they serve their purpose nicely by, like other's have suggested, letting us not care. The client wants it, we want money, everybody happy. Except yo' portfolio.

The thing is it's easy to create templates when you use FAKE CONTENT.
Trying to replicate client content to fit one of these templates is another matter alltogether, unless of course its a hosting or photographers website :-)
Also, eventhough you get a design for cheap, developing the content is not going to be free, and if you want to actually OWN on of these designs then your going to pay $2250 odd anyways.

old boss of mine runs a sweatshop of Filipino's who crank out flash designs and programming for him. You wouldn't believe how cheap it is.

For any projects I do personally, I don't believe in templates.
However there is about, lets say 1 million virtual business on the internet today. The chances of a designer spotting sister sites is very possible. But for the average consumer, its not very likely.

i agree when you have like 50 versions of one template that can be sold at a time whats the sense your the company is gonna look stupid and unprofessional.
imagine abc or something like that buyinmg one of these templates

with correct cms and css everything you build should be a template.
using one of these would be cool; right up until they say the exact same thing on someone elses page
*stock templates are the 9th sin

In many instances you can't re-create what your client wants in a template. Templates are for inside of box thinkers. I use them when a project doesn't interest me. I use them for model sites here in L.A. and that link had nothing I would be proud to show. Plus if you stick to a niche market you can create your own templates.

but would a company want something that 5 other competitors also buy just as easily?
Sounds very risky for a client.
