Someone tell me the pros and cons...
I need to make a case for PHP, which I know, use, and like because it's open source.
But other than that, I don't really know what the fundamental difference is.

faster, cheper hosts, total integration with mysql [also free], huge community that will answer most of your doubts, gazzilions of scripts for every need.
personally, open source it's a question of principle.

in case the argument is regarding asp and not asp.net:

havne't looked at the comparison links yet, but my biggest gripe with asp had always been the ties to a microsoft server (although there are usually projects to port it to linux) and that a lot of asp components have a price on them.
So when you start getting into developing things that you'd rather just grab a known library for over doing yourself, you end up shelling out licensing fees.
I've also found that a lot of asp developers (and cf as well) try to make their learning investment back by charging for access to their tutorials and their libraries / components.
In the php community, there's far more open source projects to work with and learn from, and people are happy to share the wealth of information.
Of course this also means that there's 1000's of poorly formed tutorials out there, but nonetheless, the quality information is still more easily attainable and the community is far more fluid.
As well, php is absolutely just as capable as asp in the 'enterprise' (larger scalable applications), but can be harder to sell to IT managers who actually believe the hype when they read their managerial IT magazines and see fullpage MS spreads.

while there are some differences and hooks between syntax.
vendor lock-in is a great reason to use php over asp.
php's oop is damn nice as well. php also seems more portable.
plus, you have the pear repository, the gtk and smarty extensions and a lot of other great addons for php.

Good info people.
I'll be using this. Ultimatly I need to say PHP will cost you less.
Which is true, because as we're hosting this thing, we'd have to outsource for ASP.

When CBCradio3 was being pitched management turned down a PHP backend because the felt that there would be no real body to turn to if things went sour. I thought they went with ASP, and perhaps they did for a time, but now they're on CFM.

i think the real question here is, who would win in a fight between andre the giant and hulk hogan, in their prime?

the developers here at my work seem to be drooling over asp.net...
...and juck yard dog sucked. he was always the scrub that everyone would beat on. the real winner would be george the animal steel because he had a green tongue that nobody wanted to get licked by. that and he used to rip the turnbuckle pads off with his teeth before smashing his opponents heads. that guy rocked.

an it manager who doesn't evaluate all possibilities and pick the one best suited for the project is an idiot.
i made a critical mistake like that once and learned my lesson.
i picked a solution based on a) cost and b) personal political opinion, and it nearly failed.
i should have better evaluated the situation and the two options closer and went with the better solution instead of the one "i liked."
i've since grown out of that.
this is why everyone in IT should be a geek first and a businessman second.

.net in general is pretty interesting, and c# is pretty fun for the lil experience i have with it.
and yes, the junk yard did always get his ass kicked, but i still think he had the baddest persona. And he was the coolest cat in the cartoon.

then again what geek is in his right mind?

----------------------------true, none of us are really sane.
:)
i took on management simply because i got tired of no one listening to the engineers.
sometimes it takes a crazy geek with some power to make the idiots in the executive suite understand their short-comings.
