OK, I'll try to post something on topic.
For this device's price I recommend you not buy this camera. Either get a small, portable up to $300 point&shoot or a dslr. Why a dslr over N8700?
    - image quality. dslr cameras have physically (forget MP's) bigger sensors which are way less noisy.
    - optical viewfinder. Maybe in a few years they will introduce comparable EVF's, but not yet.
    - speed. Instant on. Serial shots. no shutter lag.
    - battery life. Did I say instant on? It's always on. Standby to shooting mode in just about 0.2 sec. And with most dslrs you can shoot for a day or two on one battery set.
    - interchangeable lenses. unbeatable with add-on lenses. A great part of the fun. And of course, it's a different class of optical quality.
    - high sensitivity. As I said, dslr cams have much lower noise levels. You can shoot at ISO1600 and the picture quality will be better than N8700's ISO400. Great feature for night shots.
    - zoom and focus rings. If you must buy a compact, get one of the minoltas (A2, A200), they have manual zoom ring.
    - and last but not least, shutter sound. You can't compare the feeling you get when you hear the mirror slap with compact's artificial pre-recorded sound. I don't know about you, but I make better pictures with a camera that feels good.

My recommendations in Nikon 8700's price tag are:
    pentax *istds
    canon digital rebel
    nikon d70

I'm going to get the pentax for it's almost pocket size and backward lens compatibility untill 70's.
Best thing to do is wait a week and see what emerges during PMA 2005 http://www.dpreview.com/articles…
Rumors are, new canon and nikon models are coming out, so there will be huge discounts on the older models.

now my problem is i gotta spend like 900 to only get 6 mp..and yeah i hear them about mp not meaning shit...

can someone explain the reason that mp's dont mean anything?

really i just want a very high resolution camera w/ interchangeable lenses, and very good quality,

my whole thought process, was to get the camera that had the most mp.

so anyway, i guess i could get that d70 if its supposedly better but its like, i'd feel kinda beat, cause, to me that would mean, you could spent 600 and just got the coolpix which had more mega pixels and damn you just got a 1000 machine just cause they said it was better? will my audience even notice that quality differential

thats really why i didnt look at these other camera's cause i havent got a full understanding of why mega pixels dont mean anything...

i dunno, only way i'm really gonna truly learn is when i have experience w/ all of these different camera's hands on, trial time, so fuck it
i'ma just get one of these out the air like fuck it.

    it wont hurt me

I must say I omitted a few compact camera pro's, just because I don't see these as advantages:
    - video recording capability
    - LCD live preview (on a dslr you can only live preview through the optical viewfinder)
    - quite usable tilt or swivel LCD for live preview on some models

I'm not a pro, just gathering information for my own use. I once moved from a good 4MP compact to a 3MP dslr and was happy about it. Also, the latter taught me a lot more about photography. I was just going to get a 6MP one but decided I will be moving soon and can't justify fun spendings now.

    Now, megapixels..
6MP is about the quality of scanned 35mm camera film. (it gets better with slide film, reportedly about 9-11MP).
Megapixels are mostly used by marketing depts to push new models to the market. 8MP is actually not much bigger than 6. Also, an 8MP compact camera does not compare with an 8MP dslr. The compact camera lenses don't offer as much optical resolution as their own 8MP sensors. Even if they're called Zeiss (sony) or L (canon), they're not even nearly pro. It's only marketing babble. The cheapest interchangeable canon L lens starts at some $700 and is optically and mechanicaly superb (sharpness, color rendition, clarity, environmental sealing, focusing speed, quietness, etc.)

    D70 vs. 8700 (large files)

    D70:

    8700:

I bet if you blow up the D70 pics to 8MP in photoshop they will still have more detail than the 8700 ones. Note that the D70 pics were shot with a standard kit lens, it could get even better with a different piece of glass on it.

I hear the canon digital rebel replacement will have 8MP if you really need this much. Wait a week for the PMA and see. It should be around $800 in the US.
Have fun with your cam whichever you choose ;)
