i wish i new about design to have looked out for him sooner, he was his era's mike young...prolly was around the same time as stefan sagmeister?
i dunno anything really except that he does good work
- rise0
comparing mike young to carson is a travesty.

David Carson was about as big as a graphic designer can get in pop culture... but he's no Paul Rand.
Mike Young who?
- rise0
no, he's no where near paul, but they both have different styles of communication.
- Point50
Yeah, Carson definitely left his mark. I got really tired of hearing about him (not his work) because his name always dominated any design conversation whether it was school or work between '97-2000.
- tuig0
hehe indeed.
difference rand was a log and typeface desigenr.carson is mainly a lay-out artist and magzine.its hard to compare those.carson worked for a very fast changing media so the work now looks totally aoutdated but thats just the nature of magazine design i guess.i doesn't has to wiithstand the test time because its a magazine.same the way cna't compare him with sagmeister.sagmeister work is still good becaquse the man is purely concept.

If you wanna know more about David Carson you should check out Ray Gun Magazine... that's is pretty much what made him famous.

well there was 3 stages to Rand's career.
Carson only had 1, and then nada.
- ********0
btw, Rand didn't design typefaces. he did however use his own handwriting a lot in his work.
- Soler0
He did that wicked NIN cover for the Fragile too
- tuig0
aha,i thouhgt he also designed typefaces.he was also a teacher...one of his students was..john maeda...

i'm sorry, i am just ignorant to design kinda, but my comparison was simply popularity. i guess. like mike was a guru over certain genre's, and from what i did read, carson was a pioneer in different genre's as well
to me, it wouldnt give the same satisfaction to read the press about him, because if you werent into design while that person is runnin it, you dont feel the same as reading it.
like if you didnt grow up to rakim, it'd be kinda hard going off of what people tell you now, so you just purchase their product and enjoy.
my comparison is shadowed lightly by a little of ignorance
i dont know everything just saying what little i do knowanyway
you guys got some links to carson or randin or whatever his name was, i'd love to see the work that made em famous, or not famous but most recognized work...or whatever they have online
thanks
nick, why are you always around

omfg I can't believe there are fools who actually diss Carson.
Regardless of how you feel you simply cannot DENY that the work he did with Raygun and Surfer was friggin genius.
- taragee0
im going to dig rand up so nick can suck his dik already jeeez :P
- gabe0
*shakes head in disbelief*
"...his era's mike young..."
*shakes head again*
- JamesEngage0
people also slag off designers who might just be out of vogue... give it 20 years and everyone will love him again
- taragee0
dont you all know what hes doing now?
- MLVR0
I reckon the best comparsion with David Carson, when it comes to impact and how it affected the design community and design in general, is Neville Brody. http://www.researchstudios.com

this thread is so 'college'.
they're all humans... stop the worshiping and arguing who's better. sheesh...
... give credit where it's due - yes... but also, remember that their turds can be squishy, hard, stinky or crumbly... just like yours and mine. Arguing over who's better is lame.
Learn from them - get inspired... and move on.
go patriots (I'm such a hypocrit!)
