So I'm giving the cd a shot after reading a great article about Conor Oberst in Under The Radar.
I hate to say it, but I'm not all that impressed. I understand the accolades he's received, but it's all just kind of annoying to me. Really wondering why Lifted got so much praise, when there are so many bits that are very generic, yet I think critics have pinned them as a major Much profanity, almost like it's used as a crutch. If that's how he really talks, that's fine.
The vocals just seem irritating, unassured of himself, half singing and warbly young-twenties wonderment looking for an identity.
Maybe it will grow on me, but it's just annoying.

If you can find that issue if Under The Radar with him on the cover, pick it up, at least to read the article.
He has, it looks like, been called "the voice of his generation" and being lumped in with Dylan and Springsteen.
And the other thing I don't get, is the praise for his storytelling. I'm on my second listen to the cd, and I have not heard anything yet that really stretches too far from obvious references and interesting situational descriptions.
Every songwriter has their "thing," but personally I've always felt that the best lyrics are the ones that get you thinking about what they really mean, and/or deriving your own meaning. Looking through the lyric book, these look like stories just about anyone could tell, with slightly altered vocabulary.

I can understand why he is labeled the "voice" but I am over the age of 14 so I have a different idea of what the "voice" might be.
But I do respect his efforts in confliction... lost teenage boys sell all the records.
